On Saturday morning, asteroid 2014 HL129 moved closely by earth. The asteroid of the size of a small bus approached within 186,000 miles of earth, the distance is considered to be enough to pass between our planet and the moon's orbit.

A spokesman at NASA's asteroid watching project said the asteroid made its nearest approach to the plant at 4.13am EDT. It was on April 28 when the asteroid was discovered. Despite passing by so close to earth, the asteroid did not pose any threat to the planet.

Scientists said a number of asteroids capable of causing devastating damage to the planet pass by earth every year. But researchers across the world are continuously observing the skies to look out for any hazardous asteroids that might strike the planet.

The latest discovery has given a slight hint of about how many others are out there that can strike the planet. Asteroids hitting earth and the consequences it will have has become a topic that is letting many experts to indulge in debates.

Scientists said if an asteroid of the size of a small house hits earth at the speed of 30,000 mph, it would cause an equal amount of energy as a bomb dropped in Hiroshima, about 20 kilotons. It would be capable enough to level a mega city.

The Asteroid Watch division, part of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, has a list of identified asteroids capable of coming close to earth.
