A crop circle was discovered in a rice field in Indonesia this week, prompting a large number of spectators to get a glimpse and fueling rumors that it was caused by a UFO, The Associated Press reported.
The AP report said that it was "clearly sculpted by humans" and looks like a 70-yard-wide flower.
Police have blocked off the area with yellow tape and villagers have started charging for people to see the circle.
A phenomenon prevalent in southern England, crop circles have been thought of as messages being left by extraterrestrials. However, there have been a number of people who have claimed making them. Some companies have paid to make crop circles as a form of advertising.
Meanwhile, Yogyakarta's Gadjah Mada University officials said that they were going to investigate a rumor that a group of their students created the crop circle.
“The head of the mathematics program has phoned the 2008 student coordinator to check the truth of the rumor,” UGM mathematics student Arief Wahyu Kurniawan told tribunnews.com.
The rumor has spread via Twitter, email, and other websites.
The crop circle appeared in the rice paddies during the weekend, Guntur Purwanto, chief of Jogotirto village, told AP.
A number of people, including members of the space agency, astronomers, and nuclear energy officials say that it was man-made.
