Date/Time of event: October 1989
Location (city, state, country): South Berwick, York County, Maine, US
Detailed description: I was driving home one evening around 9 pm, along one of the routes from Kittery where I worked, to my home in South Berwick. It believe it was Rt 101. As my car climbed a hill, I saw a very large "ball" of white light arc over my car from right (appx from the Northeast) to left (appx toward the Southwest) and disappear over down into a small, deep woods, which ran down to route 236. As I drove, I was trying to look down over that hill my left, but saw nothing, not even a light or a glow.
The arc seemed to me to be heading down into the woods, and not continuing overhead. And it did disappear. When I arrived home about 5 minutes later, I called the local police, just to report it. This was in case other people saw the same thing.
Surprisingly. the dispatcher or police officer that had taken my call called me back. She said she contacted Pease AFB (In Portsmouth, NH, back down near Kittery on the coast), and they told her what I saw was an "escort craft". I asked, "Well, what was it escorting? First of all, there was no other craft near it, and secondly, it was a bright light and I saw nothing metallic or craft-like on the object."
She laughed and said, "I don't know. That's what they said." So I let it rest. The next spring, a Seacoast Weekly paper published in Portsmouth, NH had an article about "the October UFO sightings" in Maine and New Hampshire. It gave the impression that the sightings were not conclusively solved. And thinking back on it, why would any Air Force "escort craft" be traveling that low over a traveled roadway out in the "boonies" of southern Maine?
The next day, I was traveling back to work via the same route. I was trying to look around as I came to the hill in question. As I started down the hill, I saw a car stopped almost at the bottom of
the hill, in front me. As I thought to myself, "That car's stalled!", my car stalled as well. It had never done that. It was the same hill that the object had arced over the evening before. To my mind,
that confirmed that something other than the USAF's explanation had occurred there.
