Report and Investigation By Norman Gagnon – MUFON Field Investigator, April 2013
Last summer, I was incited to do a little research on secret underground tunnels and as I was meandering through the information highway, I was frequently distracted with a variety of headlines like “Covert UFO Bases”, “Subterranean Spaceports”, “FEMA camps” and articles on the underground nuclear explosion that supposedly caused the Virginia earthquake in 2011. But one particular story that captured my attention was a November 26, 2004, Washington Post article by Spencer S. Hsu –‘Navy Keeps a Secret in Plain Sight’. Hsu wrote about a series of large, non-descriptive, tan buildings that are fairly hidden by a ten-foot-high security fence. This mysterious complex is located at East Potomac Park, about 1/4 miles south of the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and was constructed in 2003 by the Navy on federal parkland without seeking permission from the commission.
In July 2012, I was temporarily residing in Washington DC for a few months and in one afternoon, I decided to conduct an exploratory survey of this site - wearing a colorful t-shirt to blend in with the tourists. As I got to the front driveway from Ohio Drive SW, I walked over to the entrance and expected a security guard to exit the main gatehouse… but the door remained closed, so I began taking photos with my Sprint LG phone. The ten foot tall wooden fence that surrounded this compound did hinder my vista so I walked around a few yards and took advantage of a large gray, self-enclosed compactor dumpster that was near this fence so I quickly climbed up to the top of this unit and from this vintage height, took a few photos of the complex.
