The rise of China poses a serious challenge to America. China’s unelected government is attempting to reap the benefits of a relatively free economic system without conceding political liberties to it citizens. According to Department of Defense reports, it is using its rising wealth to finance a massive military buildup with increasingly better weapons systems.[1] [2] It is engaged in a global diplomatic effort to expand its power and undermine U.S. influence. It frequently threatens Taiwan with military force and views us as its primary adversary. China’s military buildup should cause grave concern not only to those who live on Taiwan, but to free people throughout Asia and beyond. China also poses the largest and most active espionage threat to the U.S.

Since the end of the Cold War, our foreign policy establishment has argued that trade with China and economic liberalization there will be followed inevitably by political liberalization. In turn, a free China would cease to threaten the U.S. militarily. This has not happened, and it is naive to believe that democratization is an inevitable result of a market-like economy. Indeed, China has become more repressive throughout the past decade as its economy has boomed. It has devoted massive resources to a largely effective effort of policing and censoring the internet. Worse still, its model of combined prosperity for its elite and mass repression has attracted increasing attention from despots around the world.

What do you suppose that can be done? From where I stand on what is happening in the world, very little can be done to change China and not many people even care.

Excellent question, Revan. I'd start with not buying anything that bears the label, "Made in China". Unfortunately, that's about 40-50% of everything we buy except food.

As the second-largest consumer of Chinese goods (China being #1), a boycott on their products by the US would have a massive effect on their economy.

well, considering how much our own leaders, and elite have invested in China, and how much of our welfare they have sold off to china, i'd guess they really don't care wether we ( the USA) or it's citizens like it or not.
and considering this has been going on for the last 60 or so years, with great pushes from Bush and Co. , i figure americans don't "get it", and never will.
we just get it up the azz.
now, if dudnderheads now want us to do the 'evil empire " game, and prepare for contrived conflict with china, and more money for the elite manipulators, i also figure, that's par for the course..
wave the flag, support the troops, whatever..
smarter people should wake up as to who is leading them, and why, and where..
in truth, you are being owned..
by those you follow..
and while waking up is good, i don't think any common man can do anything about it.
we are stuck.
so enjoy..

Take a look around man... America is not that much different anymore. Yeah, we get to vote for our leadership, but they do what they want anyway. And economically, the rich are getting richer and poor are getting poorer in America, and the middle class are slowly becoming extinct. This country's free market system exists to make money at ANY cost... Stock holders support the termination or exportation of thousands of jobs if it means making a 2 dollar profit per person terminated.

We practiced commerce without a conscience long enough to have hit kick us in the ass...which is nice and stupid. Lets see if I can find an answer to those damn good points:

The United States runs trade deficits not because it is victimized by unfair competition from China or anyone else but because it suffers from a chronic shortfall of domestic saving. That’s right, lacking in saving – as evidenced by a net national saving rate that plunged to a record low of 1% of national income over the 2004-06 period – the US has no choice other than to import surplus saving from abroad if it wants to keep growing.

...thats a good point....hard to save when your in debt though...but i don't see the quest for shallow self satisfaction decline...

the biggest tragedy could come from a United States that squanders an historic chance to engage China as a strategic partner in an increasingly globalised world. And if Washington pushes China away, I fear the rest of an increasingly China-centric Asia won’t be too far behind.

This posters article is a good study IMHO.

Light at the end of the tunnel?
The University of Chicago’s Christian Broda says U.S. trade with China has reduced prices and mitigated inequality.

We gotta wise up. This is a biggie.
