PostPosted: Tue Sep 02, 2008 3:47 am    Post subject: The 10 BIGGEST MYSTERIES of The SOLAR SYSTEM Reply with quote

Tonight starting at 9PM Eastern my Good Friend Ian O'Neill from www.astroengine.com will be joining me tonight to talk about the 10 biggest mysteries of the solar system.

Here is the top 10

MYSTERIES: We've all wondered at some point or another what mysteries
our Solar System holds. After all, the eight planets (plus Pluto and
all those other dwarf planets) orbit within a very small volume of the
heliosphere (the volume of space dominated by the influence of the Sun),
what's going on in the rest of the volume we call our home? As we push
more robots into space, improve our observational capabilities and
begin to experience space for ourselves, we learn more and more about
the nature of where we come from and how the planets have evolved.

MYSTERY #10 / IMAGE #2 = SOLAR POLE TEMPERATURE Mismatch: Why is the
Sun's South Pole cooler than the North Pole?

MYSTERY #9 / IMAGE #3 = MARS MYSTERIES: Why are the Martian hemispheres
so radically different?

BONUS MYSTERY: Does the MARS CURSE exist? According to many shows,
Web sites and books there is something (almost paranormal) out in
space eating (or tampering with) our robotic Mars explorers. If you
look at the statistics, you would be forgiven for being a little
shocked: Nearly two-thirds of all Mars missions have failed. Russian
Mars-bound rockets have blown up, U.S. satellites have died mid-flight,
British landers have pock-marked the Red Planet's landscape; no Mars
mission is immune to the "Mars Triangle." So is there a "Galactic
Ghoul" out there messing with our 'bots?!

MYSTERY #8 / IMAGE #4 = The TUNGUSKA EVENT: What caused the Tunguska
impact? http://www.russianspy.org/

MYSTERY #7 / IMAGE #5 = URANUS' TILT: Why does Uranus rotate
on its side?

MYSTERY #6 / IMAGE #6 = TITAN's ATMOSPHERE: Why does Titan have an
atmosphere? Titan, one of Saturn's moons, is the ONLY moon in the
Solar System with a significant atmosphere.

MYSTERY #5 / IMAGE #7 = SOLAR CORONAL HEATING: Why is the solar
atmosphere hotter than the solar surface? Now this is a question
that has foxed solar physicists for over half a century.

MYSTERY #4 / IMAGE #8 = COMET DUST: Comets - where does their dust
come from? How did dust formed at intense temperatures appear in
frozen comets?

MYSTERY #3 / IMAGE #8 = The KUIPER CLIFF: Why does the Kuiper Belt
suddenly end? The Kuiper Belt is a huge region of the Solar System
forming a ring around the Sun just beyond the orbit of Neptune.

MYSTERY #2 / NO IMAGE = The PIONEER ANOMALY: Why are the Pioneer
probes drifting off-course? Now this is a perplexing issue for
astrophysicists, and probably the most difficult question to
answer in Solar System observations.

MYSTERY #1 / IMAGE #9 = The OORT CLOUD: How do we know the Oort Cloud
even exists? As far as Solar System mysteries go, the Pioneer anomaly
is a tough act to follow, but the Oort cloud is the biggest mystery of
all. Why? We have never seen it, it is a hypothetical region of space.
In my books, that is the biggest mystery in the outermost region
of our Solar System. -- Written by Ian O'Neill

Ian is a regular guest on Paranormal Radio with an impressive background.

Dr Ian O'Neill gained his PhD in Solar Physics on completion of his thesis entitled "Quiescent Coronal Loops Heated By Turbulence" in 2006. Before then, in 2002, he completed a Masters in Planetary and Space Physics, spending his last semester on the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard.

During his stay in the High Arctic he studied the magnificent interactions between the solar wind and the Earth's ionosphere, generating the Aurora Borealis. From this point on he was captivated by our nearest star and wanted to gain a doctorate in solar physics, in particularly simulations of the elegant coronal loops projecting from the surface of the Sun.

He was able to do this with the Solar Group at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth with Dr Xing Li. Since then he has been pursuing his interest in science writing and public outreach projects. He is heavily involved with the Mars Foundation (a US organization working on Mars settlement concepts) as their Chief Communications Officer and web designer (www.MarsHome.org).
Since December 2007 he has been working with Fraser Cain, editor of the Universe Today space news website (www.universetoday.com), as a science writer. This big break has allowed Ian to push forward with his writing career, attempting to bring complex theories of the Universe into the public domain.
He is especially drawn to space news stories of advanced physics ideas, sometimes colliding head-on with the more controversial theories that are out there. He also has his own space physics news blog at www.astroengine.com.
