Biden pick draws Democratic praise, GOP criticism By BETH FOUHY and LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writers
11 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Democrats coalesced around Barack Obama's selection of Joe Biden as his running mate on Saturday while Republicans quickly seized on the Delaware senator's past criticism of the presidential candidate's inexperience.

Former rival Hillary Rodham Clinton, an also-ran in Obama's search for a vice presidential choice, called Biden "an exceptionally strong, experienced leader and devoted public servant." Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said the Obama-Biden ticket will bring the change the country needs, including a filibuster-proof Senate majority.

The campaign of Republican rival John McCain wasted no time, immediately producing an ad featuring Biden's comments from an ABC News interview last year. Biden had said he stood by an earlier statement that Obama wasn't yet ready to be president and "the presidency is not something that lends itself to on-the-job training."

"There has been no harsher critic of Barack Obama's lack of experience than Joe Biden," McCain campaign spokesman Ben Porritt said in a statement. "Biden has denounced Barack Obama's poor foreign policy judgment and has strongly argued in his own words what Americans are quickly realizing — that Barack Obama is not ready to be president."

Obama and Biden were set to meet for an afternoon rally in Springfield, Ill., in front of the old state Capitol where the Illinois senator kicked off his presidential campaign nearly 20 months ago.

The Obama campaign sent a text message announcing his choice to supporters' phones and e-mail addresses about 3 a.m. EDT, the latest innovation by a tech-savvy operation that has deftly used the Web as a fundraising and organizing tool. The rollout was diminished somewhat when word of Obama's choice began leaking out to news media shortly before 1 a.m. EDT.

Obama and his famously disciplined team managed to keep Biden's selection a secret for several days, leading to a frenzy of speculation that mounted throughout the week. Two of those thought to be on the short list — Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine and Indiana Sen. Evan Bayh — indicated Friday night that Obama had chosen someone else.

Biden, 65, is a creature of Washington, a 35-year Senate veteran and chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee whose national security credentials will help patch a hole in Obama's relatively thin resume. Polls show that McCain holds a wide lead over Obama on the question of who is better prepared to be commander in chief.

Biden's straighforward style and working-class Catholic roots in Scranton, Pa., were also expected to help Obama appeal to middle- and working-class voters in battleground states like Ohio and Pennsylvania who favored Clinton in the primaries.

Officials close to Clinton said she was never formally vetted for the No. 2 position. The former first lady, who finished narrowly behind Obama in the primaries, will address the convention Tuesday night and her name will be placed in nomination even though she has endorsed Obama and has urged her delegates to support him.

"Sen. Biden will be a purposeful and dynamic vice president who will help Sen. Obama both win the presidency and govern this great country," Clinton said in the statement.

Biden has established a generally liberal voting record and a reputation as a long-winded orator. As a member of the Judiciary Committee — he was its chairman from 1987 to 1995 — he has played a key role in considering anti-crime legislation, Supreme Court nominees and constitutional issues.

While the war in Iraq has been supplanted as the campaign's top issues by the economy in recent months, the recent Russian invasion of Georgia has returned foreign policy to the forefront.

Biden was elected to the Senate at the age of 29 in 1972, but personal tragedy struck before he could take office. His wife and their 13-month-old daughter, Naomi, were killed when a tractor-trailer broad-sided her station wagon. Biden took his oath of office for his first term at the hospital bedside of one of his sons.

Biden dropped out of the 2008 race for the Democratic presidential nomination after a poor finish in the Iowa caucuses, but not before he talked dismissively of joining someone else's ticket.

He had stumbled on his first day in the race, apologizing for having described Obama as "clean." Months later, Obama spoke up on Biden's defense, praising him during a campaign debate for having worked for racial equality.

It was Biden's second try for the White House. The first ended badly in 1988 when he was caught lifting lines from a speech by British Labor Party leader Neil Kinnock.

Hillary if she had any sense wouldn't have been the VP Running mate. She would have been jumping on a sinking ship.

I am still trying my hardest to like obama but he just shots himself in the foot more and more. I will laugh my ass off if hillary upsets him at the convention, it's seems highly unlikely but anyhitng can happen!!

What happened to Obamas' change mantra?

This guy has been in the Senate longer than McCain. Is this the change he is talking about? Sounds like the same washington insiders to me.

Not to mention he spoke highly of McCain just recently, he stated he would be honored to run on McCains' ticket. I think Obama just lost the election with this pick.

Blood.

I don't know too much about biden but from what i have read in the last couple of days, he was just as much against obama as hillary was. So why pick him, other than he gives a different perspcetive to the obama campaign. But if he put hillary on the ticket he gets, i would say 2/3's of the hillary's vote. giving him the election hands down and unites a split dem. party

I looked at the gallup polls today and obama and mccain are locked at 45% each, they also said on there that history had shown that once a Vp running mate was picked that there approval rating usually goes up but with obama, it didn't.

I think obama is making some silly, stubbourn moves atm, that are really hurting his chances of winning.

I have been trying to find legit articles on the whole hillary winning at the convention, i have found a couple but atm it's all speculation and heresay. Her name will be on the ticket but wether or not the party votes for her is another thing.

I think she should have never conseeded and let it go untill the convention. from everything i read, the super dlegeates didn;t vote unitll the convention and it was jsut and estimation of who would vote which way. She had the strongest votes in the swinging states, i think it really came down to money i guess.

I hate to say it but unless there is a miracle McCain will beat obama with the way things are going

There was a story yesterday on one of the news channels ,I think it was CNN,that Hillary will give up her delegates on Wendsday. So I would say it's done .

Obama , Biden ticket will lose big in November.

I myself couldn't be happier. Not real fond of McCain either ,but Obama would have been a disaster for this country.

Yeah, I think obama has some kind of hidden agenda's happening and he always crumbles when challenged on his policies. I listen to US raido on the net when i am at work and i just here more and more how bad he will be and how McCain is going to kill him in the debates.

Sad news about hillary. i had a feeling she was going to try and pull the party together. but it will all be for nothing anyway Confused

Too funny to hear the right wingers lament about not facing Hillary.

@BS,

How much you wanna bet they won't "lose big", as you claim.

Myself, I predict another 49-51 election. Likely ending with another dubious stolen victory on the part of the usual suspects.

Want change? Stop voting Democrat/Republican.

there you go now with the whole change crap.

you are not going to ever get change from any party. It just won't happen. We have allowed the government to take control, and they sure in hell ain't giving it up anytime soon. No matter who you vote for.

Ron Paul , there would be no change.
Bob Barr , still no change
any others , no change.

If you really want change , you need to clean out the house ,and senate. If not you will never have change.

All are in it for their own power, not us. So cry change all you want, right now I'm going for the best that's left to vote for. That will be McCain.

What have I done to promote change?

Well for starters, in this thread I've entered into a dialog with someone whose political views differ (you) from mine, AND without resorting to name-calling/insults.

That's a positive change, wouldn't you say? At least a change from you.
