Observers in a large portion of the globe will be able to witness an Annular/Partial eclipse of the sun on June 10th! This event is mostly visible over the ocean, but a large portion of the USA and Mexico will be able to see this eclipse as a later afternoon or \"sunset\" eclipse. An Annular eclipse is one in which the moon is not able to cover up the sun totally, as the moon has a diameter that is smaller than the visible disk of the sun. This presents a problem for observers that may think it is \"safe\" to view with the naked eye.
The partial phases of the eclipse can be just as dangerous to view if you do not have a special pair of eclipse filters. DO NOT use exposed film or sunglasses off the shelf! This does not shield the eye from the dangers of infrared and other radiation. The only other safe method to view a solar eclipse, is to project the image from a telescope on to a sheet or screen and NEVER look into the telescope, but rather, look at the projected image at least 12 inches from the eyepiece.Observers should provide help and safety to small children and others.
