Feb 25, 2002 will mark the 60th anniversary of one of WW II unusual events that took place on American soil in the Los Angeles County region....
On Feb 25, 1942, a million southern Californians woke to the blare of air raid sirens at 2:25 am. A formation of red and yellow lights were reported in the skies over the Los Angeles region. Military Authorites still smarting over the Pearl Harbour sneak attack assumed Japanese aircraft were heading towards vital targets such as Long Beach, Hollywood, and defence plants in the Santa Monica area and ordered a high state of alert....
At 3:16 am, The 37th Coastal Artillery Brigade began to fire everyone of their AA batteries at the lights and proceeded to put on a pyrotechnic display even Hollywood could\'nt top. The blasts proceeded to rake the skies until 4:14 am. The only casulties reported were three people dead of heart failure and a LOT of property damage. At 7:21 am the all clear was sounded....
Military Aircraft buzzed the area but no Japanese or Nazi aircraft was ever spotted. AA Observers reported throwing shell after shell whilst defending the Douglas Aircraft plant but reported hitting no targets. The Long Beach Independent newspaper reported numerous stories regarding the incident but later reported the Military was shushing the entire matter up...
The Japs were quickly blamed for the whole mess (there was a war on you know) since several of their subs had surfaced off of California & Oregon and shelled various targets in the region. Even a Jap refueling base was discovered on one of the islands off Vancouver, Canada. Later after WW II, Japanese military figures were interrogated fully over the events of 2-25-42 but swore up and down they had no subs, ships, or aircraft in the California area.
A check of Japanese naval records confirmed this...
This entire incident later was used as part of the plot line for the lukewarm Steven Spielberg \"comedy\" 1941 (1979)
So what did appear over the Southern California ? Experts now feel that this was one of the UFO sightings that preceded the 1947 Kenneth Arnold sighting in Washington State and the Roswell, New Mexico incident. . There are numerous reports culled from American, British, Japanese, and Nazi airmen of encounters of strange lights in the skies called Foo Fighters (Which the Band took its name from ). The Foo Fighters buzzed various aircraft during WW II and provided near misses for nerve wracked pilots.
In Scandinavia , \"Ghost Rockets\" were reported over the skies of Norway, Finland, and Sweden during 1946-47. Skeptics dismissed this as overflies by Soviet aircraft or renegade Nazi Airmen and even General Jimmy Doolittle of Tokyo Raid fame was sent to investigate. Doolittle quickly stated that these had to be unidentified aircraft since they were reported flying in hazardous conditions that no pilot would dare risk....
So what exactly did haunt the skies in LA that night ? UFO\'s, careless American aviators, or the imagination of a war wracked populace ?
If any of our California BV\'ers can shed any further light on this matter, let us know !
