ScienceDaily (Jun. 14, 2006) — The first images of a live specimen of a small, furry animal once believed to have gone extinct more than 11 million years ago have been captured during a Southeast Asian expedition led by a retired Florida State University researcher.
The remarkable video and photos shot by David Redfield, a professor emeritus of FSU's science education faculty, and Thai wildlife biologist Uthai Treesucon are being hailed as historic images documenting a true "living fossil," the Laotian rock rat.

I didn't know they had black squirrels in Canada. There is one town in the US where I have seen them. Marysville, Kansas has them in their park. From what I was told when I visited there in 73, they were brought over from Germany by an immigrant in the 1800s.
Any way, squirrels are a little different. Their tails are bushier and their heads aren't quite as long or pointed as this animal. This is the first time I've seen a rat with a hairy tail. |

Heh, I've seen these before, actually even eaten them. They are a species of rodent that live around Laos. You can find them in some local market places. They are not a common item though. I have also seen them being sold for food in North East Thailand (Esaan) as well.
I always just considered it a very stupid docile rodent. Never new it was of great importance to the science world. |
