(CNN) -- NASA's Phoenix lander has discovered a toxic chemical in soil near Mars' north pole, dimming hopes for finding life on the Red Planet, the probe's operators said Monday.
The chemical, perchlorate, is an oxidant widely used in solid rocket fuel. Researchers are still puzzling over the results and checking to make sure the perchlorate wasn't carried to Mars from Earth, the University of Arizona-based science team said.

There wasn't much of a chance on finding life on Mars anyway, just wanted to see if there was ice. |

Mars is a big place and it's a good chance the toxin is not everywhere. Like they say: It may be contamination by the lander's exhaust.
If it does turn out to be all over the planet? We can use Mars as a fuel station.
Of course it could be that someone had already visited Mars? |

| I am a supporter of making a place on the Moon for us first, then worry about Mars. It would be cheaper in the long run and shorten the trip to Mars. |

I`m so sick when I hear this things.
There is no way life can exist on Mars because the ground is toxic.
Toxis to whom? To this planetīs lifeforms? sure, to marsians? Donīt say yes or no yet. |

I agree...
I understand that they are looking for carbon based, human-type lifeforms because that is what we are and that is what we know the most about (obviously) therefore they are the easiest for us to try and find since we know what things they need to survive however, to denounce that ANY life can exist just because we could not is just selfish. I mean, I seriously doubt there is life on Mars (save possibly some microbiotic life frozen in ice or something) however, I am most sure there is life SOMEWHERE in the universe (probably more than we would ever imagine) however, I am also quite sure that WHEN (not if) we find it, it's not going to be like us.
Just my 2 cents... |
