Hmmm ...

I was taking a shower and thinking about the ecological state of planet and how hamonious life is on earth in terms of how plant life breaks down H2O and soaks up the hydrogen and expells the oxygen for sentient beings to consume.

In essence plant life does not produce oxygen molecules but rather exhumes oxygen from H2O. So plant life doesn't make oxygen ... it breaks it away from the H2O. Extracting oxygen straight from the universe is possible since oxygen is basically made in stars. I think the coined term is "Bio Star" (not the motherboard).

There is an amazing abunace of oxygen within our universe. Oxygen atoms existed since the big bang, according to modern theorists. But in order to facilitate life on this planet oxygen had to combine with a hydrogen.

Oxygen 16 (16O), Oxygen 17 (17O), and Oxygen 18 (1Shocked), with 16O being the most abundant of the Oxygen Isotopes (99.762% natural abundance) are considered stable to survive any duration of time. H2O is a combination of Oxygen 18 and Oxygen 17.

I believe we can extract oxygen from basically anywhere in the universe, where there are stars there is oxygen isotopes which are stable enough to extract through a process much like a trees internal processes. It's just a matter of finding the right processes like osmosis. Hydrogen metals anyone?

Fingers tired?

Not to pick, but last I checked plants converted CO2, utilizing the Carbon (C1) and releasing the Oxygen (O2), via chemical reaction involving chlorophyll and sunlight. Which is why we need trees and green stuff, like the rain forests that get chopped down daily, to help counter the buildup of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. color]

Actually, he's right. The first step is stripping the protons from water. The Calvin Cycle ("Dark cycle" i think its called) happens after the photolytic part, and involves carbon fixation. The net result in CO2 in and O2 out, but it happens in two separate reaction cycles, and the one that actually involves light is just cracking water.

Sorry, must have missed that day in Biology, probably attempting some 'experiments'...anyway, though Lucifer waxed poetic, I didn't quite get the point of his ramble. Is it me, or was it just musing on his part? Confused

Hahaha. Well, I don't think we really have a lack of oxygen right now. But in the event that we did, there would be many easier, more efficient, and less costly methods of isolating oxygen atoms planet-side I would think.

You are correct, at least that's how it worked last I checked as well. The chemical reaction is called Photosynthesis
