I live in the desert in Washington state, the land here is mostly flat and wide open. There are not trees, only sagebrush in some patches. Other than that it is mostly rock and miles of nothing. The most common animals around here are coyotes. Occasionally we do get a few gray wolves, mountain lions, moose and every great once in awhile a bear. Today I was driving on the highway between the town I live in and the next nearest town, which is twenty miles away. While I was driving I saw something that I could not identify.

I was only about five hundred yards in front of me when it ran across the highway. I was large and black. Not the tawny or gray colors of most of the large animals around here. And it didn't run like a coyote or large dog. I am very familiar with the appearance and movement of wild animals and would have recognized it had it been any of the common animals. This thing ran more like a cat. It was at least as big as a mountain lion, at least that was what I thought when I first saw it on the highway. Then after it crossed the highway, it ran through a large patch of sagebrush. That's when I realized that it was much larger than I first thought. As it ran through the sagebrush, I could still see its back above the sagebrush. The sagebrush around here grows to a hight of 2 1/2 to three feet tall. What ever this thing was it was at least four feet tall and it was running quite a bit faster than any of the coyotes or mountain lions I have seen here. It was too tall, and the wrong color for a mountain lion.

I really wish I had taken my camera with me. I'm going to have to start carrying it all the time I guess. Anyway, does anyone have any idea what this might be?

Ever see the show Monsterquest? An episode a few months back addressed the very part of the country you live in, and investigated an animal similar to what you just described. Several experts could not identify the creature, captured on grainy home film. It was abnormal in size and pure black, like what you saw. If you have "On Demand," itay still be up, on the History Channel, I think. Your description is very, very, similar, almost to the letter. So your not the only one to see this, according to this show. So keep on looking, and keep that camera close buy, good luck!

Could it be something like a panther? If they are even in that region?!
