Note: Some of this is in Swedish so i will translate it for you:
A future disaster could obliterate life on earth, plant species that's been around for millions of years will be obliterated in the blink of an eye and never come back again. That's how the world leaders and scientists reason when they in this mountain in Norway called Svalbard now have created their own Noah's ark. An underground storage where plant seeds from all the corners of earth is stored, protected from the forces of nature and war.
---Speaks in English---
The doomsday vault, as it is called, is situated 130 meters above the water surface, to be safe from ascending water levels as a result of the global warming.
And since it is situated so deep into the mountain where permafrost exist, it will stand against all imaginable climate changes in Svalbard
Now when the vault is inaugurated(?) by Norway's Prime minister Jens Stoltenberg and the EU commissions president José Manuel Barroso the shelves will be filled with the fragile seeds and let them live on, whatever happens.
---Speaks in English---
Not the best translation but hope it'll do. |

| I wonder how long it would last, and how many seeds they would be able to get. There are a lot out there you know... |

The seed bank is a wonderful plan, but extremely presumptuous.
Someone will have to actually survive doomsday after it has "obliterated life on earth". Someone will have to survive many decades after all plant and animal life have been destroyed. They'll have to wait until earth has recovered sufficiently and growing conditions are suitable for seed germination, plant growth and reproduction. And then... that same someone will have to know the seed bank at Svalbard exists and how to enter it. |

Not to mention you need gardening skills or the plant would just end up dead anyway. |

Maybe at the time of this so called armageddon,
They will post a guard at the door, so no one unworhty can enter. Kind of like Raiders of the lost ark.
They will be the one responsable for bringing the planet back.
You have chosen poorly. melting skulls and all that crap...

| Hmmm....wondering how soon they expect this cataclysm considering most seeds loose viability 50 - 65 % for each year stored even under the best conditions used by most farmers/horticulturists I know of. Give 4 to 5 years of storage and the collection might be worthless. |

Hopefully they neglected to include any seed for brussel sprouts. That's one plant that Earth could absolutely do without. |

| The mayan calander so i hear says the world will end in 2012 i wonder if there is any correlation i have to wonder what would prompt such an undertaking i also agree with bloo many people have to survive as just a few people arent gonna cut it and find this place how many people will really remember "hey guys we have all these seeds in norway" and then travel the world replanting the worlds seeds wow that's quite an undertaking |

As it says in my first post "That's how the world leaders and scientists reason when they in this mountain in Norway called Svalbard now have created their own Noah's ark."
Don't you think the leaders and scientists have an area in which they will be safe from all the disasters that will take place on earth, and when it's over they will replant it all?
I know i do, why else would they bother building that thing? Im sure it isnt so that some random people hopefully will remember that there is a vault containing all the seeds in the world. |

Just because someone puts a vault up for “just in case” doesn’t mean something is going to happen. But rather what “could happen”
For example I could put a fire extenuator in the lobby “in case” of a fire. That doesn’t mean a fire will happen but rather that it “can” happen. Your jumping to speculation to think a group is making protection for themselves…..
Of course there are a number of reasons to why we are doing this for seeds and not exactly "people". One of which is that we need food while being held in storage. |

Keep it next to the muffler bearings, please. The board stretchers installed in the hall won't take the load.
Let them do what they will. The seed bank is a step in the right direction for extreme survivalists. If the French had done something like that, their current vines wouldn't be from American transplants of French stock.
By the way, the Mayans were wrong. Their culture ended long ago and 2012 hasn't happened yet. These calendars are always geared up to show the end of civilization as it is known to the culture that created it. Puts them right up there with Nostradamus and the folks who are waiting for Armageddon, which is a historical event already. |

Ok lol i didnt say the Mayans were right im just trying to get at what the motivation was, everything we do has some reason behind it as in maybe they think global warming or asteroid and yea i understand just in case but if i put a fire extenuator?? up it would be most likely for electrical or gas related fire i would speculate i also dont think its a bad idea just as we need to save dna samples for any species on the verge of extinction
And my goodness if we cant come to the black vault forums and ask the questions why and i wonder what is the point |

Well to be honest, now that I know safetly is up "making" a fire seems fun yo do. Grab your nukes! Now that we can rebuild the world we have nothing to care about anymore!
Ancient civilations were not all that of great, take this article for example.
