WASHINGTON — Democrat Barack Obama said Sunday he will push for higher Social Security taxes if elected, viewing it as the best option for improving the retirement program's finances.
Obama and several other Democratic presidential candidates previously have signaled support for lifting the cap on the amount of income that is taxed to provide monthly Social Security checks.
But during an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," Obama said taxing more of a person's income was the option he would push for if elected president. He objected to benefit cuts or a higher retirement age.
"I think the best way to approach this is to adjust the cap on the payroll tax so that people like myself are paying a little bit more and people who are in need are protected," the Illinois senator said.
"That is the option that I will be pushing forward."
Currently, only the first $97,500 of a person's annual income is taxed. That cap is scheduled to rise to $102,000 next year.
Obama's proposal could include a gap or "doughnut hole" to shield middle-income earners from higher payroll taxes, he said.
Obama has tried to draw contrasts between himself and front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton on Social Security, saying on the stump and in TV ads that she has dodged tough questions about its finances.
Obama said some tough decisions will be in order because Social Security is the most important social program in the country.
"It's not sufficient for us to just finesse the issue because we're worried that, well, we might be attacked for the various options we present," he said.
Clinton has said growing the economy will pump more money into Social Security's coffers. She also has said she would create a bipartisan commission to recommend solutions.
Social Security is projected to start spending more than it collects beginning in 2017, with its trust fund depleted in 2041.
Obama also invoked his friend, billionaire Warren Buffett, who Obama said has expressed concern that he is paying less in Social Security taxes than anyone else in his office.
"And he has said, and I think a lot of us who have been fortunate are willing to pay a little bit more to make sure that a senior citizen who is struggling to deal with rising property taxes or rising heating bills, that they've got the coverage that they need," Obama said.
On the Republican side, candidate Fred Thompson last week unveiled a Social Security proposal that calls for reducing benefits to future retirees and creating a system of voluntary personal retirement accounts. The plan is similar to one put forth by President Bush that ultimately stalled in Congress.
All the Democrat candidates have one thing in common, they all want to raise taxes. We do not need higher taxes, we need a common sense approach to economics and we definitely do not need a socialist government. |

All dems raise taxes.
Let's see...do I want a corporate regime that controls the government? Or do I want a socialistic government? Um...wait...Stalin said that when corporations rule government it was called Fascism, which was popular amongst the "intellectuals" of the early 20th century. Wait...most democrats and republicans support a fascist state in this country.
Nope. I want my constitution back. Screw corporations, screw fascism, screw welfare to big business.
People died for our Constitution. Let's keep it in tact!
For those who claim that they'll support the Constitution, will you do it today in remembrance of all lives that have been martyred for the Constitution? I don't like war and did not join in military because my beliefs are similar to Thomas Payne's, but I will take the stand to die for my constitution. |

Sorry Sparty, no dinner, lube or kisses just wham bam give it up.
My neighbor is on social security, he received a letter last week from them informing him he had made too much money last year and his medicare premium would be raised and additional $65.40 a month. He already pays income tax on his social security. The taxing of social security comes from the largest tax increase in history that was passed in 1993. The bill came to a tie vote in the Senate and VP Al Gore broke the tie when he voted for it. |

I agree, I am a strict constructionist when it concerns the Constitution. If congress followed the Constitution to the letter we would abolish about 90% of the laws on the books. |

| Thomas Jefferson knew you can't legislate morality. Today the government runs around making laws that protect us from ourselves. There's the helmut law, seatbelt law, no smoking law, etc. The only thing these types of laws to is raise revenue for the state. It's completely out of control. |

| Would everyone please give the possibility of a new revolution a chance? most people are blinded by billboards and what the govt can give you..THEY WORK FOR US! we need to take our country back, now! Its right in the constitution, the right to bear arms to protect ourselves from all enemies foreign and DOMESTIC. politicians keep us split on racial, religious, social hierarchy, and political lines. reps and dems arent all that different. they just make us concentrate on bull crap instead of real issues like how they constantly take our money to stuff them and their friends pockets that helped them get into and remain in power. they wont hand it over to us we need to forcibly take it. its our duty as Americans. |

You must be joking!
Under Stalin, who employed the people? What was life like in Russia in those days? How about working conditions and wages? What Constitution did Stalin go by? Have any idea how many people Stalin murdered? Any idea what you had to do in Russia, just to go purchase what is in your USA markets?(corparations too) You compare life in the United States and Corporations that employ millions of people, provide them with wages to own homes, have medical and benifits, good working conditions, retirment, to Stalin?
Please educate is all on how life under Stalin would be far better than life working for a major corparation in the USA. |

I don;t understand your logic again(what a surprize  ) I feel very sorry for you to somehow compare the country you enjoy the feedom to write this stuff to a rechime like Stalin. I don;t know what your preception of our Corporations are, but the government does definatly make the rules, they have to follow, not visa versa. If that were not true, you would not believe what working conditions and other enviormental issues would be today. And I might add that, the stringent rules, put on the big companies, also trickles down to their subcontractors to follow, and affect the practices of many bussinesses that do not do bussness with them, but end up affected by these laws. It affects you in your job too. Big companies although they are tough at barganing times, do work in with the unions. Safty issues, and woking conditions in all bussinesses have gone to higher standards becasue of unions and big companies, working togather to solve safety issues.
As far a corporations that have opened up shop accross the border in Mexico, many did it to get dirt cheap labor, provide poor working conditions, and sneek around enviormental laws, Mexico turns their head at. I wouldn;t be so quick to think its a good thing yet. One of your links was about counterfeit products, but I think many conterfeits come in thru Mexico or aisa, and are sold all over swap meets and flea markets. It isn;t that regulated from the looks of it, at least on the Mexican ones.
Any argument you have, using Stalin as a yardstick, is pretty rediculas to me. Maybe you have never worked in a big industry to know the difference. |
