If exercising your constitutional rights is considered terrorism, then call me a terrorist. I will fight to the death to support my constitution!
If You Aren't Doing Anything Wrong, You Have Nothing To Worry About. Oh, and Excercising Your Rights. Probably Shouldn't Do That, Either
Radley Balko | October 8, 2008, 2:47pm
Appalling:
The Maryland State Police classified 53 nonviolent activists as terrorists and entered their names and personal information into state and federal databases that track terrorism suspects, the state police chief acknowledged yesterday.
Police Superintendent Terrence B. Sheridan revealed at a legislative hearing that the surveillance operation, which targeted opponents of the death penalty and the Iraq war, was far more extensive than was known when its existence was disclosed in July.
The department started sending letters of notification Saturday to the activists, inviting them to review their files before they are purged from the databases, Sheridan said.
"The names don't belong in there," he told the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee. "It's as simple as that."
The surveillance took place over 14 months in 2005 and 2006, under the administration of former governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R). The former state police superintendent who authorized the operation, Thomas E. Hutchins, defended the program in testimony yesterday. Hutchins said the program was a bulwark against potential violence and called the activists "fringe people."
Sheridan said protest groups were also entered as terrorist organizations in the databases, but his staff has not identified which ones.
Stunned senators pressed Sheridan to apologize to the activists for the spying, assailed in an independent review last week as "overreaching" by law enforcement officials who were oblivious to their violation of the activists' rights of free expression and association. The letter, obtained by The Washington Post, does not apologize but admits that the state police have "no evidence whatsoever of any involvement in violent crime" by those classified as terrorists.
That this joke could rise to the level of state police superintendent is a pretty damning indictment of the Maryland's State Police. Here's what he thinks of the First Amendment:
Hutchins told the committee it was not accurate to describe the program as spying. "I doubt anyone who has used that term has ever met a spy," he told the committee.
"What John Walker did is spying," Hutchins said, referring to John Walker Jr., a communications specialist for the U.S. Navy convicted of selling secrets to the Soviet U.nion. Hutchins said the intelligence agents, whose logs were obtained by the American Civil Liberties U.nion of Maryland as part of a lawsuit, were monitoring "open public meetings." His officers sought a "situational awareness" of the potential for disruption as death penalty opponents prepared to protest the executions of two men on death row, Hutchins said.
"I don't believe the First Amendment is any guarantee to those who wish to disrupt the government," he said.
"Disrupting the government" apparently now includes no more than expressing your disagreement with it.

"Disrupting the government"?
The Federal Reserve is a terrorist organization, then. |

"If you're not with us, you're with the terrorists"
It's amazing what that line did to change the American psyche.
This is nothing new. Only your media was too afraid or too in bed with the neo-cons to write about it. Not sure which.
Americans need to read media from other parts of the world. Your media is way too skewed and owned by people with agendas. Infotainment.
If you are happy with your media, then you deserve it. |

I fixed the title. Thats what I get for being in a hurry.
Yeah Micki, our media does suck. I knew about this before, but there are many here who believe that if you don't do anything wrong then there is nothing to worry about. This is more evidence for them to realize they're wrong. |

| One of the decreasing, remaining differences between the US and less free countries is that citizens of less free countries know better than to believe anything they are told by the media. When the government of Egypt, or Russia, etc. speaks...the people roundly disregard. The people of less free nations are much more aware of the imaginary line separating gov't/media/$$$. |

And hear we are in this thread, with nothing but an op/ed media piece to look at, and so far everyone in the thread believes it. So I guess you're right. |

You can throw all the news links and youtube vids you want at me, but nothing will deter from personal experience. |

| This country is going to internally explode. People grow weaker by the day. There is no such thing as peaceful protest, it's called making a racket. You want change? Pick up a rifle and kill someone. |

I personally know two guys who are on some list when they fly.
Then again, there have been many people throughout the years who have been put on some sort of list by the government. Bobby Fischer's family was tracked when he was growning up.
But, go ahead and believe that you're not on a list. You'd never know it if you were.
King, yes there are peaceful protests, I've been to them. However, I will agree that they're pretty much useless. |

| Peaceful Protestors should be charged with a crime against humanity - knowingly partaking in delusions. |
