not always but sometimes we are fortunate to be in a position to question
or very existence , learn from the experience and collaborate with those whom provide for it...

recently I was tasked w/ an informal group of young interns concerning
the fine art of medical science,( if we can call it that) and an short
question and answer session that I believe will stay w/ me and the interns
through out their gifted and difficult life.

I say difficult because of the long hours and often stressful position doctors experience in often understated but important ways. they meet and great us at birth, if tasked they worry about matters concerning health we would like to forget. and if we are lucky, near death an doctor leans in and says in a whisper ; 'you have led a good life' , 'ou viiu ' , so long daddy ' o'

i was first asked about conditions related to health, and my general ideas and concepts concerning wellness. their role in the equation, and realistic outcomes.

I was thrilled of the depth and concern shown these young doctors. but wanting to add something to the goal of wellness and not one to hinder such promising,
budding carreers I answered w/ an definitive

we want the truth concerning all medical advice and procedures.
and to be given this information in an apolitical environment.

mostly in agreement , some held the hippocrates oath (both versions) as an
guiding principal. so, to further this thought I asked if an doctor could be
apolitical at work , and be politically charged at home.

my next question was to openly doubt their profession , by calling them collectively, disingenuous due to conflicted values...

in general the response was realistic in that as one intern put it. we have
limitations as to what can be accomplished both physically, and financially.
politically, our jobs might be at risk, taking a given view, one that is considered
opposition to the norm

I agree, your right. what gives the bahrain government the authority to
imprison you for adherence to the code of ethics and oath of office ?
the reply was measured... we cant do anything about Bahrain w./ out the perception of impropriety , or against the laws of a given nation and risk arrest.

thanks for the interesting discussion . in conclusion we are victims of
of our own conscious . one brave soul lingered and ventured one last
comment to my liking and said we are not cowards sir. we have choice,
and free will and can walk away at any time to prevent and do no harm.
I looked at him and managed to almost conceal a wry smile for effect.
than prove it I said. thinking him one of the few doctors of the heart.

what nation could survive w/ out doctors ? how long might an dictators army

exist if all the doctors believed in : " doing no harm " or contributing to 'aiding

and abetting' in the perpetuation of violence (human rights violations) what if all

the doctors collectivly walked off their jobs. ???

leveraged their 'knowledge' for an political goal of releasing bahrainian doctors

in prison unjustly for doing their jobs. expanding this goal in the furtherance

of human rights in the region ?

Ricardo,

It is highly idealistic to imagine that any doctor
would walk away from suffering humanity. It's why
they took the oath, afterall. Even to protest against
dictatorship. But thats just my opinion.

My great grandfather was a doctor back in
Georgia and lived in a rural community. My
grandmother said she went with him on many
housecalls and if the patient had no money he
was willing to accept a live chicken or a homemade
quilt, etc. for payment. He had a small pharmacy as
well and I imagine used the barter system there as well.
But times have changed and so have people. I've rambled a bit off
topic but I do that. 🙂

what humanity ? that allows an doctor to contribute to an 'execution ',

contrary that moral code or oath of office: 'to preserve life and do no harm' ?

or to 'fix someone up' knowing they are going to be tortured.

what moral code allows doctors to work in an government run hospital that

serves only a specific colour, race, creed, or religion ! and knowingly

allows others to die ? ( there are drs in Bahrain whom are sentenced to

prison for abiding by the high values and dignity of the drs oath of office.)

igster , thanks for sharing the history about your great grand father. (U.S.A.)

he is among an mostly noble profession... from the heart !

Ricardo,

This is repulsive . I should have done my homeowrk and read up on
this situation in Bahrain. My heart goes out to the poeple and the
doctors that are "used" ( and thats what it is). I read up on Bahrain
and it's an Island I see. Crimes against humanity. 🙁 I wish I were powerful
enough to help. All I can do is shine the light of awareness when I can.
Thank you for caring.

we have an large military base there. I will consider that an conflict of interest,
and an hindrance to deploying our human rights projection of ideas. our nation
must be flexable , and use its power and influence to free the doctors( political prisoners.)

or at least dominated . what man would not play the game and do what they

were told if a gun was placed at their head or livelihood threatened in any way ?

what kind of man am I ??? ( if I get political at work ?)
