Swedish authorities have issued an arrest warant for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on suspician of rape and molestation.

Swedish authorities have issued an arrest warrant for Wikileaks founder Julian Assange on suspicion of molestation and rape.

The warrant was issued late yesterday, said a spokeswoman at Sweden's prosecutors' office in Stockholm.

She said Assange should contact the Swedish police for questioning about the accusations of molestation and rape in two separate cases "so that he can be confronted with the suspicions".

Assange has denied the charges, which were first reported by the Swedish tabloid Expressen, on Wikileaks' Twitter account.

He implied that they were linked to the release by the whistleblowers' website of a huge cache of US military records about the Afghan war, which were published in collaboration with the Guardian and two other papers.

Assange said: "The charges are without basis and their issue at this moment is deeply disturbing."

Earlier postings on the Twitter account implied the accusations were part of a dirty tricks campaign against the Wikileaks founder, who has been strongly criticised by the Pentagon.

"Expressen is a tabloid; No one here has been contacted by Swedish police. Needless to say, this will prove hugely distracting.

"We were warned to expect 'dirty tricks'. Now we have the first one."

Last month Wikileaks released around 77,000 secret US military documents on the war in Afghanistan.

US authorities criticised the leak, saying it could put the lives of coalition soldiers and Afghan informants at risk.

Assange has said that Wikileaks is intending to release a further 15,000 documents in the coming weeks - a pledge condemned by the Pentagon, which has demanded the deletion of the files from the website.

Assange, an Australian citizen, was in Sweden last week to apply for a publishing certificate to make sure the website, which has servers in Sweden, can take full advantage of Swedish laws protecting whistleblowers.

He also gave a talk about his work and defended the decision by Wikileaks to publish the Afghan war logs.

Whats the saying Rath? All is fair in Love and War! I think its priceless he call this a "dirty trick". This from a smuck who conspires to have 90,000 Documents stolen, commits crimes against the USA, recieves the documents, prints them, blackmails the Pentagon and the USA, and now he cries "dirty tricks". It would almost be funny if other people didn;t think the same way, like Rath and all the other patriots on the board.

He also says the charges are "deeply disturbing". He might goto jail but Afgans being murdered due to him, isn't disturbing? I guess since he is some sort of hero, the idea he is the kind of slittering snake who could be a Rapist isn't possible. after all Roman Polanski made good movies, so he was not a child molester and rapist. 🙄 I know, Aquarian is about to say, people were getting killed anyway, whats the difference? 🙄

By KARL RITTER, Associated Press Writer Karl Ritter, Associated Press Writer – 10 mins ago
STOCKHOLM – Swedish prosecutors withdrew an arrest warrant for the founder of WikiLeaks on Saturday, saying less than a day after the document was issued that it was based on an unfounded accusation of rape.

They said that for the moment Julian Assange remains suspected of the lesser crime of molestation in a separate case.

The accusations have been labeled a dirty trick by Julian Assange and his group, who are preparing to release a fresh batch of classified U.S. documents from the Afghan war.

Swedish prosecutors had urged Assange — a nomadic 39-year-old Australian whose whereabouts were unclear — to turn himself in to police to face questioning in the case involving suspicions of rape and the other based on an accusation of molestation.

"I don't think there is reason to suspect that he has committed rape," chief prosecutor Eva Finne said, in announcing the withdrawal of the warrant.

Karin Rosander, a spokeswoman for the Swedish Prosecution Authority, said Assange remains suspected of molestation.

"The prosecutor hasn't made a decision" on that count, Rosander said. "The investigation continues."

Assange had dismissed the allegations in a statement on WikiLeaks' Twitter page, saying "the charges are without basis and their issue at this moment is deeply disturbing."
He was in Sweden last week seeking legal protection for the whistle-blower website, which angered the Obama administration for publishing thousands of leaked documents about U.S. military activities in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The first files in Wikileaks' "Afghan War Diary" revealed classified military documents covering the war in Afghanistan from 2004 to 2010. Assange said Wednesday that WikiLeaks plans to release a new batch of 15,000 documents from the Afghan war within weeks.

The Pentagon says the information could risk the lives of U.S. troops and their Afghan helpers and have demanded WikiLeaks return all leaked documents and remove them from the Internet.

Assange has no permanent address and travels frequently — jumping from one friend's place to the next. He disappears from public view for months at a time, only to reappear in the full glare of the cameras at packed news conferences to discuss his site's latest disclosure.

Assange declined to talk about his background at a news conference in Stockholm a week ago. Equally secretive is the small team behind WikiLeaks, reportedly just a half-dozen people and casual volunteers who offer their services as needed.

A WikiLeaks spokesman, who says he goes by the name Daniel Schmitt in order to protect his identity, told The Associated Press in a telephone interview from Iceland that the "extremely serious allegations" came as a complete surprise.

Apart from the comment from Assange, WikiLeaks' Twitter page had a link to an article in Swedish tabloid Expressen, which first reported the allegations.

"We were warned to expect 'dirty tricks.' Now we have the first one," it said.

Assange was in Sweden partly to apply for a publishing certificate to make sure the website, which has servers in Sweden, can take full advantage of Swedish laws protecting whistle-blowers.

He also spoke at a seminar hosted by the Christian faction of the opposition Social Democratic party and announced he would write bimonthly columns for a left-wing Swedish newspaper.

Rath, you have no idea if these charges are real or not real. You just do not want to think that this so called Hero, Julian Assange, could be a rapist and molester. I say, anyone with the level of ethics he has, is not beyond anything like this, and it could be true.

I commented about Roman Polanski, but the truth is, he thumbed his nose at Authority, fled to a country sympathetic to him and got away with crimes. Becasue of what is precieved as good things he did in movies, the preception was he was the victim and not a child molesting scumbag. Similarly, Julian Assange, us precieved as a anti-war hero and patriot, however his lack of concern for results of his actions, show me he has no scruples, or ethics about him, to be concerned whatsoever for a rape victim. You have to be a sneeky little scumbag to know printing secrets documents may kill someone and still do it, and the same mentality of sneeky little scumbags commit rape and molestion.

With the level of suspicion that The Black Vault pins on government authorities and institutions, it still surprises me that some of us are not willing to question the sudden issuing of arrest warrants and charges. However, the Swedish authorities have already retracted:

http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/europe/08 ... index.html

Stockholm, Sweden (CNN) -- Swedish authorities say they have revoked an arrest warrant that had alleged rape against Julian Assange, the founder and editor of the whistle-blowing website WikiLeaks, less than a day after issuing it.

Assange is "no longer wanted" and "is not suspected of rape," Chief Prosecutor Eva Finne said in a statement posted on the agency's official website Saturday. He is also no longer arrested in absentia, the statement said.

If you are going to quote Aquarian, than don't lie and distort the facts. This it the complete quote, and you can see he is still suspected of molestation.

You make comments about others but it is you and Rath just making the assumption this is a good guy, and this must be trumped up charges. I contend he is a scumbag, and that a scumbag like him, would do something as low down as rape a molestition. You are fast to pin this on the Government, but this warrent occured in Sweden, not the USA, and could not have generated unless there was a victim, who filed a complaint.

It doesn't matter even if he committed molestation AND rape. No matter what he did, he'll always be a hero to the fanatics. They'll just dismiss anything he's accused of as the bad guys trumping up false charges.

The guy could stand in front of the camera and commit the acts he's accused of, and they would still say the footage was doctored.

It's just the way it is.

It doesn't matter to you? Is that what yer saying? I'm surprised by your lack of commitment to the truth.

It was quite clever. To cast aspersions of molestation against Assange, then a quick retraction. Impugn his character. Plant the idea. It is easier for the sheep to dismiss Assange, the alleged molestor.
