HALIFAX, Nova Scotia -- A leading U.S. senator on defense issues says any military strike on Iran to stop its nuclear program must also strive to take out Iran's military capability.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican who sits on the Armed Services Committee and the Homeland Security Committee, said Saturday the U.S. should consider sinking the Iranian navy, destroying its air force and delivering a decisive blow to the Revolutionary Guard.

He says they should neuter the regime, destroy its ability to fight back and hope Iranians will take a chance to take back their government.

His remarks stunned many in the audience at the Halifax International Security forum.

Graham told the audience that newly elected conservatives would back "bold" action against Iran, reports Agence France Presse:

If President Barack Obama "decides to be tough with Iran beyond sanctions, I think he is going to feel a lot of Republican support for the idea that we cannot let Iran develop a nuclear weapon," he told the Halifax International Security Forum.

"The last thing America wants is another military conflict, but the last thing the world needs is a nuclear-armed Iran... Containment is off the table."

The Obama administration, through top military officials, has made it clear that all options are on the table.

I can't find any credible sources on this one... but taken at face value - I am appalled that he would make these statements publicly like this. He can think them all he wants but to announce it publicly--even without any support--is not very smart. Folks in the Middle East don't know anything about this guy, they'll take it like war is imminent.

Oh well.

The best way to "neuter" Iran is to get off oil and sit back and watch 'em go broke and overthrow their government themselves.

I agree with Tom here:

Lindsey has issues---how he continues to get elected should concern everyone who claims to be concerned about America.

It remains clear that even if you do support someone hiding nefarious intentions that the U.S. is not doing anything to ease the tensions with Iran, beginning with the Bush Administration's accusations that it was "meddling" in Iraq. Obama has pressed for more sanctions that will only serve to debilitiate the Iranian people, not the Iranian elites. It seems like every day U.S.-Iran relations continue to worsen which seems more like a pre-warm up for another war of aggression. This is why the U.S. is the most dangerous country in the world. It is cunniving.

What's this about me "supporting someone hiding nefarious intentions?" All I said was regardless of his personal thoughts, he shouldn't have come out with something that harsh publicly.

And I'm disturbed by your repeated assumptions that the US is at fault. The entire world disagrees with you on the Iran subject.

And it's a fact that Iran meddled in Iraq, so again, what's your beef. They are also as a matter of fact meddling in Afghanistan, but I presume that's something you completely support.

Iran will have a nuclear-armed long range missile in the next few years. Does that not represent a problem to you whatsoever? Or is it ok, as long as their missiles can only reach countries you hate, like Israel? Could you at least be concerned about the nuclear fallout endangering your friends in Hamas and the PLO?

You're obviously a pacifist who believes the US should never get involved in any conflict for any reason. That is impossible in the real world unless we were to become utterly and completely isolationist. And something tells me you don't support that either because--let me guess--we are obligated as a "wealthy nation" to dole out help across the world.

Am I right? We should back down to everyone and avoid conflict entirely, but we should also make ourselves available across the world for handouts.

Please share your thoughts on what our foreign policy should be.

Something is wrong with you Aquarian. You need a short vacation to Iran to clue you in on what you are actually backing, as you again condemn your own country. m
