Diggers pelted with stones in Afghanistan
Updated 46 minutes ago
Australian troops have been forced to defend a patrol base from Afghan locals after an alleged Koran-burning incident.
Australian troops have been attacked with stones in a deadly protest at an Afghan military base after fabricated reports that copies of the Koran had been burnt.
A Defence Department spokesman said two days ago several hundred Afghans protested in response to the Koran burning allegations at a forward operating base just north of Tarin Kowt.
But the spokesman says the allegations were fabricated by the Taliban as part of their plans to disrupt this weekend's elections.
During the demonstration Australian soldiers were struck by rocks but were not injured.
One of the protesters aimed an AK-47 at an international coalition soldier. The Defence Department spokesman says the soldier shot the protester and that the action was in accordance with rules of engagement.
But the spokesman says the soldier was not Australian and that there is no evidence of Australian or international coalition troop involvement in any alleged Koran burning incident.
Last week US pastor Terry Jones caused controversy when he threatened to burn copies of the Koran on the anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot...
