WASHINGTON — President Obama, delivering a major speech on the Middle East and North Africa, Thursday called for the borders of Israel and any future Palestinian state to be based on 1967 lines with "mutually agreed swaps."

His proposal immediately drew a cool response from Israel and the Islamist Hamas movement while Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas called an "urgent" meeting of Palestinian leaders.

"Negotiations should result in two states, with permanent Palestinian borders with Israel, Jordan, and Egypt, and permanent Israeli borders with Palestine," Obama said in his 45-minute speech at the US State Department.

President Obama told Israel today to return to the 1967 border agreement.

Obama said Israel would not be expected to give back any territory until it could be guaranteed of its own security.

"Every state has the right to self-defense, and Israel must be able to defend itself -- by itself -- against any threat," he said.

Obama's speech, in which he also announced a significant economic aid package for Egypt, came just one day before he was scheduled to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House and two days after he held talks with King Abdullah II of Jordan.

Netanyahu's office immediately issued a statement calling on Washington to reaffirm "commitments" made to Israel by former President George W. Bush in 2004, AFP reported.

"Among other things, those commitments relate to Israel not having to withdraw to the 1967 lines, which are both indefensible and which would leave major Israeli population centres in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank) beyond those lines," the statement said.

"Those commitments also ensure Israel's well-being as a Jewish state by making clear that Palestinian refugees will settle in a future Palestinian state rather than in Israel."

The Simon Wiesenthal Center, one of the largest international Jewish human rights organizations, issued a statement saying a return to 1967 borders as a basis for negotiations "is a non-starter, when at least half of the Palestinian rulers are committed to Israel's destruction."

The 1967 borders refer to those that existed before the Six-Day War, when Egypt, Syria and Jordan launched a surprise attack on Israel. The result was a decisive Israeli victory that left Israel in control of disputed territories such as the Golan Heights and Gaza Strip. A return to the 1967 borders would mean Israel relinquishing certain territories, a position the country has opposed.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for an "urgent" meeting of Palestinian leaders immediately after Obama finished speaking.

I think that is the whole problem Bloodstone. He's not serving as president. He is serving Islam from the office of our president, which he occupies under false pretense.

Everyone wanted change, now they got it. Bush isn;t looking so bad anymore is he? Neither would John McCain look so bad either.
Biden didn't end up looking so great either, with his foot in his mouth so many times, Palin couldn't have been as bad as Joe.

You can blame the US News Media for giving us this guy. They spent 8+ years bashing GWB 24 hours a day. As a result, the people were willing to accept ANYBODY. I hold the news media directly responsible. And Bloodstone, we did see him coming and we were shouting about it. Unfortunately, no one was listening. When Jimmy Carter became president I thought there was no way it could get any worse. Then they gave us Bill Clinton and I thought, there is no way it could get any worse. But the democrats found a way. Next time they'll have to dig up OBL or Saddam Hussein and run with that, because there is nothing, in the human species, worse that what we got now. "Ass Clown" just doesn't begin to describe it.

Oh yeah, the demand for Israel to go back to 1967 borders just shows the lack of comprehension of world matters.

The Media was only part of it, but what really did the trick was an 8 year campaign of non-stop bashing of the Bush Administration on the internet. Distortions and lies, not way to verify any story, and it all became gosple. Before anything could be addressed, next day more came. Al Franken when elected really shed some light on how this internet approach really got him elected as well. Disinmormation and rumers, and everyone bought it, hook, line, and sinker. AFter the Democrats got back in office, look how many of those same people on this board alone dissappeared. The war on Terror forum has died on the vine, but we are still in the same wars, Obama escalated Afganistan, and has been doing drone hits in Pakistan, but nobody is bashing him like they did Bush.

I've been a big defender of the Bin Laden mission, but one small detail could reviel it could all be Boloney. George W. Bush turned down Obamas invitation to attend the ground zero visit with him. Maybe GWB already knew the truth about Bin Laden, the day he left office, and knows its a scam he will be no part of. Nobody can say GWB ever interfered with Obama, nor did he ever say a thing about his policys, that would have vindicated some of the myths about himself.

GWB,
Looking back..he was laways just..himself..he coudl have spun it all so much more than he did.
He always felt like a guy I'd want to hang out with.

I like Obama, well enough too..but yeah, he, his team has spin down to a serious artform.
Bush's people did their fair share of spin (PLENTY)..but Bush himself, was maybe too true to himself to be able to pull it off well, personally (which is actually a compliment to his character)..Obama, is one smooth spinner..gotta give him that..almost too smooth
