Does Religion cause most wars?

Hi,

My opinion is no. Religion is not the cause of most wars. The Encyclopedia of War vol. 1,2,3 says that only about 17% of wars have been purely religious. Most wars are fought for expansionism and greed.

Religion is often the excuse given, the justification made, the rallying words employed to call impassioned peasants to fight, kill and die for a "holy cause" but in reality wars are almost always fought for the gain of territory, resources and more power for the powerful people who start them.

When you get past the rhetoric and down to the basic cause, most wars are fought because one side has something the other side needs, like territory and oil, or wants - such as restoration of national pride or vengeance.

Some examples of secular wars {not caused by religion} :
Vietnam, Korea, Grenada, Cold War skirmishes, WWI, WWII, Falkland Islands War, War of 1812, American War of Independence, Battle of Troy, Roman Conquests, French-Vietnam War, Opium Wars, Iraq Wars, Rwandan Civil War, etc...

Religion teaches peace not war.

I totally agree with your viewpoint on this. It is not religion..because most religions are about finding peace and learning to love your brother. Its the humans who twist the words and concepts , and use it as an excuse to cover for their personal gain.

I replied to this but it must not have submitted.

Statisticly religions causing more wars, and war deaths than any other reason is totally untrue. I previously posted a link that classified all wars and disasters back to the days of Christ, and the facts do not support this belief. That belief is a complete misconception, and a common argument among people, trying to make a point of religions causing more wars than anything. Somehow it is a fact unversally accepted, but when you look at the statistics, it is not true. It is a totally false assumption. Even counting the estimates of the "Crusades", if I remember there were 7 of them, they pale in comparison to other wars. WW2 alone is estimated conserativly to have killed about 50 million, but could be as high as 70 million. The estimates of the Crusades are maybe a few million. Very few wars are classified as religious wars in nature, or casued by religion. WW1 and WW2 certainly were not religious wars, nor any war the USA has ever been in.

How many Jews were killed again? Not to argue--but I'd be interested in seeing the link you mention in regard to your post.

Ethnic cleansing has been around for THOUSANDS of years. The current situation in Iraq is due to what? Factions being-Religious factions who hate each other.

The war on terror: Isn't it in truth a war on Muslim/Islamic-- a Religious belief--some what is it 4 billion of them?

How many dead since 2002 a span of almost 8 years--8 years and counting.

Something tells me you're conflicted with the reality of the Bible as it relates to History.

Greeney see if you can find that link please.

Here is just one paper from those that know:

It's very easy to become confused when passion or belief is involved!

The reference to Bosnia is a very good example!

Hi,

thanks greeney2 and Cole.

Cole, I think the war on Terror, was started because of greed {oil} and and probably a little pride on Mr. Bush's part {so he could finish the war his father started}.I also believe that it may of had something to do with taking away the rights of the Citizens of the United States. Homeland security..{ that's a conspiracy theory though }

I don't believe its a war against all Muslims, but the radical terrorists. The Muslim religion does not teach terror tactics anymore than the Christian religion. There are evil/whacked out people from all types of religions and walks of life, but you can't blame the apple tree for the rotten apples.

Simply an excellent post, one of the very best I've ever read on the board, both past and present apps.

Is it that you are interested in the body count, or, were you trying to make a point?

Hitler was an an occultist and radical/fanatic humanist, who, being the latter, thought it best for the human race as a whole that the Jews be extinguished.

Hitler did not kill 6M Jews becasue of his own religion, nor was WW2 a war over religion either. The belief is war in the name of religion has caused more deaths than anything. Hitler was guided by the desire of world dominace, and a perverted idea of a pure white race, not religion.
