A teacher in the Bay Area is docking students points on their over all grade for each time they sneeze or say 'bless you' when someone sneezes..he says it is because he doesn't like disruptions (which is nuts) but it does bring up interesting stuff.
Sneezing is an autonomic response..so he is nuts or I think he is covering for his want of pushing an agenda and starting a debate over 'belss you')

So is saying 'bless you' a common courtesy or a form of proselytizing?

I say it's common courtesy..he is being petty..but I see what he is getting at

I came up with my own thing to say when someone sneezes -- "kaboom smite"....since it does rhyme with "Gesundheit." Laugh

Some people look at me like I'm crazy; others laugh. And some people just say "thank you" because they think I'm saying (or trying to say) "Gesundheit." Laugh

I don't believe what I believe because it's what I desire to believe. I believe what I believe because it's what science, evidence, and logic causes me to believe.

As the story reads, were these kids in the class just being disruptive as a group, like all kids do. One does it than another does it, something nobody will ever get in trouble for. "You can't touch me" kind of thing? I'll sneeze and you say "Bless you", its all innocent, who has the best sneeze, the mission of the day to screw around. Or is this teacher on some kind of politically correct agenda, to strike any reference to God being used? Who doesn't remember as a kid, whats more fun than being a disruption with normal things, we all did it, and so did our kids. Gives them a badge of honor to brag about during the lunch break.

We had a history teacher Mr. Holdridge, who had this habbit of blinking oddly, so we kicknamed him "Holdy the poor blinking fool". One day Holdy had his zipper down, and everyone saw it, was giggling, and one kid kept raising his hand, Holdy told him over and over, put your hand down. Holdy knew he was just being disrptive, finally he gave in and asked "what". He went up to him and whispered your fly is down, so he sat down at his desk. The class was laughing outloud, and Holdy finally gave in, zipped it up behind the desk, and with a red face said "OK lets all have a good laugh". EVeryday was something new, being jerks in Holdy's class. Kids all do it, some teachers show some weakness, and it spreads like wildfire what you can get away with. Its like a competition. We could write a book on what we did to Mrs. Brockmier.

yeah, kids can be rotten, and we were. My friend Glenn, saw Mrs. Brockmeir on a bus, about 10 years after high school. He talked to her and told her he was sorry for the things he did in high school in her class. She was really a sweet ol lady and a wonderful person.

This makes me laugh. I swear this article could have been written about a class I was in. A kid would sneeze and we all would go around the classroom one after another saying "bless you".."bless you"..."bless you" and so on. Just to get a rise out of the teacher. And it worked! The teacher told us we couldn't say bless you anymore. However, we weren't as uptight as these stupid people who are actually making news of this matter. What a joke!

Edit:

Vickie Fagan says Cuckovich asked if they thought the girl who sneezed was evil, and if evil spirits were coming out of her. The teacher then started disciplining students for saying "Bless you."

Why? Is he a History teacher? Was he demonstrating how silly it is that people used to believe that kind of stuff?
