Second life (SL) is an MMORPG in which people gather to have parties or chat. It's a lot like a glorified chat room/facebook where people can control where they are, what they say, and what they look like (among other things). I was talking with a friend and in SL chats, they refer to RL (real life) as 1st life or FL.

I find what that number is being used for to be highly interesting. Is there a 0th life? Are these bodies we are fastened to actually just avatars, perhaps avatars for our souls?

And for sure, we could make an MMORPG in which your character is playing an MMORPG within the grander MMORPG which makes 3rd life a reality.

This of course connects to Plato's cave, the brain in a vat, the matrix, the 13th floor movie, etc etc etc. In the Plato cave analogy, the prisoners are in their 2nd life mode in which they are shackled and can only see the shadows of things. Once someone climbs out of their 2nd life and out of the cave (some might call this awakening), they then begin to become aware of their 1st "more real" life.

I haven't read Plato myself but my understanding of the Plato cave analogy is that there are three states of mind: in the cave (2nd life), out of the cave (1st life), and the transition in between the two (1.5 life??).

Point being, I don't know if Plato ever considered a 0th life, something more real than our 1st lives. If he did, I would like to see how he described the 0th life.

This opens the door for wondering further if there is a -1st life, a -2nd life, etc.. Does it ever end? How deep does the rabbit hole go?

I believe Plato would call the realm of forms the 0th life...But I'm just guessing as it has been a while since I necromanced him.

What would mathematics be without 0?

I've been told that once we did math without 0...  Is that true?

Wow...I can still add while drunk. Laugh

Such a society would be dominated by an elite, unrestrained by traditional values. Soon it will be possible to assert almost continuous surveillance over every citizen... - Zbigniew Brezhinsky
