When the kids were young, we all watched WWF wrestling every week, and went to the LA sports arena to watch the then ongoing Hulk Hogan, Macho Man fued matches, that featured Miss Elizabeth. You got your moneys worth, non-stop cheering and excitment from the minute you sat down til you left. Also on the same card was Dino Bravo, and a match with Mr. Perfect, all who have all died with exception of Hulk Hogan. There is a long list of the WWF stars who have now died from that period of time, its rather shocking to read many of the names. They all died so young, in most cases. Maybe the movie with Mickey Rorke gave an accurate portrayal of that life which showed a hard life, and behind the scenes not very glamorous.

TMZ reported today that pro wrestling great Randy "Macho Man" Savage, has died after suffering a heart attack behind the wheel of a car in Florida.

He lost control of the car and crashed into a tree. His wife was in the car, but was unharmed.

Sadly, it's yet another tragic end for a former pro wrestling star. His long time "manager," "Miss Elizabeth" Hulette, died of a drug overdose in 2003.

Savage, whose real name was Randy Poffo, was a second generation wrestler. His father Angelo, and his brother, "Leaping Lanny" were also wrestling stars.

We don't normally consider pro wrestling to be a sport, but Macho Man was one of the better athletes to ever play "the game." He actually played minor league baseball for several years before getting into the wrestling business and his "flying elbow" finishing move was legendary to pro wrestling fans.

Personally, I have to say that as a young fan of pro wrestling in the late '80s, the Macho Man was always one of my favorites. He gave some the best interviews the sport has ever seen and his matches were exciting, funny, and dramatic. In a world of colorful characters, he somehow found a way to stand out. We miss him already.

To get a sense of how he became a fan favorite, check out one of his trademark entrances (when he was still a heel) and also the "historic" moment when he first teamed up with Hulk Hogan:

I saw this on Yahoo news.
He was da bomb

I remember watching him in the early nineties, when Brett Heart was huge (I had a thing for Brett Heart, so I was into wrestling for a bit)

My sis inlaw would, unknowingly, sound a-lot like Randy Savage back in the days, when we'd party hard..it was too funny.

RIP Randy

Bionic, Brett Hart was my daughters favorite wrestler. Probably her first "crush" when she was young. Brett seems to have excaped that world in tact and Normal. I think! I know he has no love for Vince McMann, who in real life must be one of the biggest #$&holes on earth. Before the steroid problems, he probably demanded it form his stars. As you know Hulk Hogan in real life had to testify in a federal probe against McMann, which led to his long legal battle, with McMann having the rights to his name Hulk Hogan. Its took years in court to do that legal battle.

It is sad the lives these guys sign up for. Bottom line, fake or not fake in the ring, they are a phenominal combination of talant. They have to be extremely tough, and extreme physical condition, able to coreagraph these bouts, and do the stunts without getting hurt or hurting the other guy. On top of all that, they have to carry off the image and character of their character, and if they do not have some carisma to them, all the other traits will fail. Its a very special combination of talant, and ability, and only a handful can really do it. If they can, they also have teh test of time to battle, how long can they physically do it over and over, and do it with injuries. They are like jet set rock stars, doing a arena someplace, hoping on a jet for the next arena, and traveling like rock stars on a ridgid tour schedule. Hulk Hogan got them all into the big money, he was a real pioneer for them as high paid stars. I read that Madison Square gardens use to have considerable trouble selling out major boxing events, but would sell out WWF wrestling every time.

Liked him and Miss Elisabeth back in the day. He also played Baseball for some Minor League Team as well !

In recent interviews he comes across as the nicest guy. A bitsd and broken, though. God bless him. The sport did take his brother's life, though. So maybe he needs to release that, realizing his bro died doing what he loved. We should all be so lucky.
Brett Hart is awesome and should know it and own it!!!
