If this story is true, Obama should immediately be removed from office and charged with treason. No, that's not an overreaction.

Reportedly the White House threatened Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson with the closing of STRATCOM (Strategic Air Command) if he doesn't vote yes to healthcare "reform."

Yes, the Weekly Standard is a Conservative magazine. But so what. That doesn't automatically mean they make up stories. The Weekly Standard is a real pulication with real sources in Washington. This story is so big, the source hasn't been revealed yet. This has got to be investigated! Meanwhile don't count on any Liberal media organizations to utter a peep about this.

Source: Dems Threaten Nelson In Pursuit of 60

While the Democrats appease Senator Lieberman, they still have to worry about other recalcitrant Democrats including Nebraska Senator Ben Nelson. Though Lieberman has been out front in the fight against the public option and the Medicare buy-in, Nelson was critical of both. Now that those provisions appear to have been stripped from the bill, Lieberman may get on board, but Nelson's demand that taxpayer money not be used to fund abortion has still not been met. According to a Senate aide, the White House is now threatening to put Nebraska's Offutt Air Force Base on the BRAC list if Nelson doesn't fall into line.

Offutt Air Force Base employs some 10,000 military and federal employees in Southeastern Nebraska. As our source put it, this is a "naked effort by Rahm Emanuel and the White House to extort Nelson's vote." They are "threatening to close a base vital to national security for what?" asked the Senate staffer.

Indeed, Offutt is the headquarters for US Strategic Command, the successor to Strategic Air Command, and not by accident. STRATCOM was located in the middle of the country for strategic reasons. Its closure would be a massive blow to the economy of the state of Nebraska, but it would also be another example of this administration playing politics with our national security.

For everyone's sake I hope this one isn't true.

If so, I agree with you frrosted. This can not stand...

This is absolutely sickening. I heard this last night.

How is it these types of stories are really ignored by the mainstream media.

Anyone see the guy who was doing an interview at the Copenhagen Global Warming summit dressed as a polar bear, and he got shouted at, and even got clocked with a piece of fruit in the eye someone chucked at him?

Seems like anyone who wants to challenge the "leftist belief system" will be threatened, beaten (SEIU video) etc.

Can't wait for the next election.

WOW!

Agreed, hope this is bogus, and if it's not immediate action should be taken. That's blatant disregard for the citizenry, using the lives of others as leverage to push a political notion.

Treason indeed.

I didn't hear about the fruit-to-the-eye/polar bear incident but I kind of chuckled.

But yes, the left ridicules, demonizes, and attacks anyone who stands in their way. Kind of interesting that Joe Liebermann was totally against healthcare 'reform' until the morning after his wife was attacked by the left. They recruited Hollywood actors/actresses to try and oust her as global ambassador of a breast cancer research foundation, saying in part that Joe Liebermann's opposition to the healthcare bill makes her 'unfit for the role.'

The right wing has its share of radicals but the left wing is really showing its true colors. The left wing is dominated by radicals, resembling a an angry mob with rabies. They know no bounds. They'll stop at nothing.

This latest bit with STRATCOM takes the cake.

I said when he was elected he was going to pay for all this crap at the expence of our military and space programs. He will cancel every new major program and hack into several that exist right now. He is stupid enough to commit troops, but only 3/4 of what they asked for and announced to the enemy when we will leave. He is now intimating working with Iran with them having their nuclear program. He also did not learn his lesson approching Russia and Iran directly, and yesterday sent a direct message to North Korea. Obama is a fool, and he is controled by Polosi and Reed, and the rest of the liberal Congress. He will make our military look worse than Carter did in this administration. Just wait to see what he starts cancelling.

Greeney2, if you understand the depth of this breaking story, all that matters right now is whether it's true or not. If it's a lie, then well, I'd be surprised but fine. But if this Senate Aide is telling the truth? Obama MUST be impeached for extortion and putting our nation's security directly at risk for political gain.

Think of the implications. It makes those involved in Watergate look like angels.

You can figure that everytime a big bill is on the table, and several Senators or Congressmen are "meeting with the President", all it ends up is an extortion session of you give me this if you was that. Hittlng below the belt isn't the only thing Obama will probably do. What do you call it when the Republicans are locked out of hearing things?

According to this article, Nelson's Aide is denying the rumor.

Nelson aide: Offutt claim false

By Joseph Morton
WORLD-HERALD BUREAU

WASHINGTON — As the Senate health care debate enters crunch time, the pressure from all sides continued to grow today, with Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., right in the middle.

His spokesman quickly dismissed a report by conservative columnist Michelle Malkin that Nelson was even being threatened with “closure of an air force base,” presumably Offutt Air Force Base, which is south of Omaha and home of U.S. Strategic Command. Malkin also said Nelson has been promised a “bribe bigger than Sen. Landrieu's.”

That's a reference to Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu, a Democrat and one of the last holdouts on the vote to begin the health care debate. The legislation includes a provision to increase Louisiana's Medicaid funds that Landrieu says is worth $300 million.

Nelson spokesman Jake Thompson said both of Malkin's claims about Nelson are false.

“The rumor is not true,” Thompson said. “This misinformation is coming from inside-the-Beltway partisans who only want to derail health care reform.”

Still, it seemed clear that the heat was being turned up as Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., races to finish the sweeping bill by Christmas.

A national group composed of organizations such as Physicians for Reform, National Taxpayers Union, 60 Plus and Americans for Tax Reform group was encouraging supporters to stop by Nelson's Omaha office today to voice opposition to the health care legislation.

At the same time, conservative activists planned an anti-legislation rally today on Capitol Hill and President Barack Obama invited all of the Senate Democrats to the White House to tell them it's time to come together to pass the bill.

Senate Democrats said Monday that they are moving toward dropping a new government-run insurance program and an expansion of the Medicare program to secure passage of health care legislation.

The Democrats have been divided on how best to extend coverage to tens of millions of uninsured Americans. Many liberals want a so-called public option run by the government to compete with private insurers and to allow people as young as 55 to enroll in Medicare.

After a meeting of Senate Democrats on Monday, Sens. Evan Bayh of Indiana and Max Baucus of Montana said it looked as though the proposed Medicare expansion would be dropped.

Without any Republican support, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid needs all 60 votes controlled by Democrats to get a bill passed.

Yeah, well, it was huge but something did seem odd about it. The guy from the Weekly Standard that broke the story even said it was a ridiculous threat because it will be 2012 before any bases are slated to be closed.

Anyway, at the same time no way did he just make it up. That Senate Aide is either lying now or was lying when he leaked the story.

What a mess this whole thing is.
