I recently moved to Minneapolis.
What I didn't know, until recently, is that the Minneapolis area is full of Somalians...many recent immigrants. Fine..cool..I am an immigrant (my family came here form the UK when I was a small child)
I am cool wiht Somalians. (actually..to be hoenst..I am a little uncomfortable with it..but will acclimate..in time)
What I am NOT FINE with is what I saw today.(and will never be okay with)
A woman..in my local Walmart..with her husband..in a FULL BURQA..everything covered, but her eyes.
I have been bothered all day about it. I just about cried when I saw her..walking behind her husband.
I am all for religious traditions..but this goes too far...too far for me, anyway.
It stinks of oppression.
It scares me for women in the USA.
It sets a precident that I don't want set..allowing this.
I feel, like in France, it should be made illegal here.
Thyere are certain religious practices that are not allowed in the USA...taking in certain hallucinagens, for instance.
I believe the full cover burqa should also be illegal..supposed religious excemption or not.
It is WAY offensive and oppressive to women.
A step way backward.
It's bad enough I have to witness this shite going on in other countries. I will not put up with seeing it in mine.

I would be disturbed by it also. If I'm not mistaken, there is a large Muslim population in your area... I think there was some stink a while back about the MSP airport taxi drivers (being mostly Muslims) refusing to pick up anyone who was intoxicated or having alcohol on their person... and it ended up upsetting people pretty bad. I think I remember that right, or was it Milwaukee. Oh well.

I'm feelin' ya. It does stink of oppression. What a pathetic, backward, archaic, sexist practice it is.

Did you hear that in Oklahoma, Sharia was made illegal--a preemptive measure in case anyone ever even thought about settling court cases using Sharia Law. And then, some judge I can't remember his name, blocked the law. So here we go again...

We're just now beginning to feel the Muslim "heat." We should take a cold, hard look at the European nations that welcomed Muslims with open arms and see how all that worked out, so we don't repeat any mistakes that might have been made.

Exactly!!
"barbarians at the gate"
comes to mind.
My fear is that, political correctness, run amock, will truly screw us..just like it has soem Europian and Scandinavian countries.
We need to nip this crap in the bud..before it's too late.

Minneapolis has the highest population in I think near the entire U.S.Cities of Somalians.
Living in Stillwater Minnesota I do not see very many of them, but then again I don't see very many ethnic peoples here at all. Full burqas, you'll see them all the time in the Minneapolis area, all the time.

astonishment. “I never heard of such a thing!”

This really does beg many many questions. I had a few aruguments over the years with Nasaie when I dared to talk about womans rights, in the middle east. Her opinion is that is is their culture and none of our business, where my opinion is that it is the total oppression of women required my men to live like this. For some of them, they completly believe it is their religion and totally accept that.

This is not the middle east, this is the USA, and although I say, it is their right, by choice to practice their religion. Are they being oppressed or is it their choice? Who ever this husband is, he came to the USA to escape a certain amount of persecution and oppression himself. So what in it for the Mrs.? She gets to come to the land of the free, and still have her face covered and walk behind him? She is never allowed to vote or be a free american, while he is?

We are making a big big mistake is this country, allowing such "religous" practices to violate the basic freedoms of the Constitution. Give it 40-50 years when they have a huge foothold in this country, and become the dominant voting force in our society. Clerics will tell them who to vote for, and this country will become another oppressive middle eastern country, with Islamic leaders. Just like the NYC mosque thumbing our freedom of religion at us, this is doing it on a individual level.

It also raised a few other questions, one of which is a valid Identification with a picture. Muslims have faught this on religious basis to allow them to be photographed in a Burka, hiding the face. How can you walk into a bank, and say this isn't a stick up, or board an airplane inside this country without showing your face.

Their argument is their religious freedom and we are no differnet from a orthodox Jew, or any other religion that lives in a certain garb. Thats a tough argument to beat, but on this issue, the implication is that, the woman is living with the same oppression she had in Somalia, or any other Islamic country. As for Somalia, I'm not that convinced they are a very nice country to begin with, given the record of piracy, and the USA having to send troops into Somalia so the starving were assured getting food aid.

Burquas should be banned world wide, how do you know what is under them? How would you know it is a woman when only the eyes are exposed? Who is to say that she is not carrying an Uzi or a bomb under the damn thing.

It is illegal to wear a full faced Motorcycle helmet into a bank or in stores in Australia because the persons face it not exposed so they can be identified, why the hell then should a Burqua be any different in that case??

As for the oppression of women, yes it is.

Religious beliefs or not Burquas pose a clear and present danger to security. Freedom of religious expression is all well and good but with every freedom there are responsibilities associated with such freedoms.

Foreigners to whatever country they enter should be made to assimilate, if they don't want to do that .. make them leave.

I have a bumper sticker that simply says "Assimilate or LEAVE" right beside the Aussie Flag.
Yeah it pisses people off .. to Fu**en bad.
