Pretty darn staggering to watch. I know they have made changes in disposable diapers since they first came out where they would have taken hundreds of years to biodegrade, now they are made to be biodegradable in a short time but don;t know how long it takes. These are filling our landfills, nobody uses the cloth washable ones, and I believe most of the diaper services like we used with our kids are in business anymore.

As far as all these things in the video, the first thing you have to say is, if they got there its becasue somebody put it there. Littering is the primary way. Those 2 places in Los Angeles I'm familiar with, so when they are thrown out of a car, they end up in the LA river storm drainage system, which is a seperate system from the sewers. Being plastic, many of these things occur becasue they are light weight, and blow away. Plastic market bags are nortorious for getting blown away. I'm not sure if they have done away with the 6-pack plastic that binds 6-cans togather, I;m surprized he tell about those, they are a particular hazzard to fish and sealife, other wild animals.

In Los Angeles we have gone to trash pick ups that everyone gets containers with lids, and the truck picks them up and dumps them. Blue cans are for recycle items, Green of for lawn/garden things that are taken to multch farms, and the other is garbage that goes to the landfills. People cheat, and put garbage in the Blue can, people pick your cans on gargage night for the aluminum, which they should not allow. The city defreys their costs with the recycle progams for the taxpayers, its not intended for a income sourse for illegals to take and sell to metal dealers.

Here's the dump in the Pacific Ocean:

Here's the one in the Atlantic Ocean:

Dawkins thinks belief in God is an excuse to evade thinking in the scientific world. Sadly, he is ignorant to the list of christian scientists who have contributed & founded many of the sciences he himself believes in. How ironic.

:o(
and that's just the stuff that goes to the ocean..all the dumps..everywhere...yikes

now they they add plastic eating bacteria to it all...so there's that..I guess

we need to make a fuel from landfill/dump 'juice'..that stuff is so nasty and toxic..it must be flammible..which is another way of saying "energy source"

it's the ultimate in recycling

Nice. I authored a post about this nearly a year ago, and nobody bothered to look.

The North Pacific Gyre has contained a "plastic island" for probably over twenty years now. Within it, you'll find the remnants of everything from Nike sneakers to IUD's. The South Pacific Gyre probably isn't any better, though I've not heard reference to it, beyond its being noted as another blue-water circulation pattern.

Want more specific ingredients? Here's a partial list: Polystyrene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate, polybutadiene, neoprene, isoprene. Just about anything that lands on a beach, or can fall off a ship, that will float, is out there.

It's interesting to note that 'reputable researchers' are just now beginning to look at this, given that it's been known about, and reported, for so long. I did a search through the available online college research resources, only to find that nobody had done any real research on this, except for one professor, who made the video which is on YouTube.

The psychology of the situation is obvious: Nobody wants to know about the mess that we've all helped create, and nobody is volunteering to help clean it up. I've yet to hear about so much as one deep-sea trawler or purse seiner heading out to clean up any of it.

If not that post lead me to looking it up and watching some video on it all

Greeney,
I know..it's crazy, scary

add to that an aging population..many damaged kids

all who will eventually need to be taken care of by the young, strong and healthy (which will be the lesser number of people at some point)

:sigh:

We certainly are making a mess of this world.
