SR: It should really say "Why So Socialist ?"

LOS ANGELES -- A poster showing President Barack Obama as Heath Ledger's "Joker" character from "The Dark Knight" is creating a stir on the streets of Los Angeles where the image began appearing over the weekend.

The Obama-Joker poster shows President Obama with white face paint, dark eye shadow and smudged red lipstick and also has the word "socialism" printed in bold, dark letters under the image of his face.

It's unclear who created the image and who is posting it across the city. No one has taken credit so far.

Los Angeles Urban Policy Roundtable President Earl Ofari Hutchinson is calling the depiction, politically mean spirited and dangerous.

Hutchinson is challenging the group or individual that put up the poster to have the courage and decency to publicly identify themselves.

"Depicting the president as demonic and a socialist goes beyond political spoofery," says Hutchinson, "it is mean-spirited and dangerous."

"We have issued a public challenge to the person or group that put up the poster to come forth and publicly tell why they have used this offensive depiction to ridicule President Obama."

Originated on /b/.

I didn't think they'd get to LA so quickly, thought they were starting it in New York.

I had this same complaint to many of you that posted the same kind of trash pictures of Bush, and you all defended doing it. I didn't condone doing it to Bush and I don't condone doing it the Obama or any President. I think its disgraceful no matter what you think of the man, its about respecting the office.

Lets see if the same defenders of the Bush trash pictures defend these too.

I don't like the picture, but presidents have always been poked fun of by comedians. Noone ever got this riled up when Nixon or Clinton or any other president were the subjects of jokes. Yes, its in poor taste, but most humor hinges on what a lot of people consider bad taste. Personally I don't like blonde jokes, Lol.
Obama isn't any better than any other president and should not get special treatment.

Crap, I just realized something.

They depicted Obama in white-face!

Get ready for another week of riots.

There is a big difference between good clean ribbing and crossing boundries into a rehlm of extremely bad taste and total disrespect. The kind of Saturday night live/ Leno/ Letterman humor is sometimes at the edge, but still doesn't cross bounds of decency. Even Nixon poked fun at himself saying "sock it to me" on laugh in.

The odd thing is that you keep going on about `respect`. Our PM isn’t treated like that at all. There was one press meeting last month where the reporter stood up and asked if Brown knew what he was doing (the rest of the Press laughed) which with Brown is a fair question. Laugh Laugh Laugh

We don’t treat a PM like it’s some sacred position, fine we don’t make posters like that one (which is stupid to say the least 🙄 ).

I think the difference is that we attack their politics (for which Brown deservedly get called `the clueless wonder` sometimes), whereas Americans attack their personalities.

We attack their personalities as well but it almost always boils down to politics, unless it is meant as a joke (Brown and his `superman` comment is a good example, harmless banter that everyone joined in at, even Brown so it must have been funny!).

Another thing as well is that even the parties don’t act like spineless idiots around the PM, something your politicians should learn about, it gets a bit annoying to watch some of your politicians sometimes.

We had a debate last Wednesday where a Labour backbencher was grilling his own party leader (Brown again, poor bastard Laugh ) for about five minuets.

The PM isn’t the most important man in the country and I think that’s part of it. The PM can’t pass a law without the Commons having a debate, then the House of Lords has to have a debate about it and then the queen has to sign it I think. But even if the Queen doesn’t have to sign it, it still has to go both houses.

I don’t know why but I’m making sound a lot more complicated than it really is. Embarassed

Basically. Brown is 3rd most important person in the country (I’ve bumped him up a few spots there as well Laugh ).

Queen
Both houses (The Commons and The Lords)
Prime Minister/Chancellor of the Exchequer (Secretary of the Treasury)
