I grew up in Kenmore, only 13 miles from these pictures taken of the Falls. Pretty weird to see, but this was in the plans to do when my Dad moved us out West. I remember very well many people in Buffalo/Kenmore were into boating on Lake Erie and the Niagara River. It was well know if our boat broke down and you were on the Falls side of Grand Island, that current would take you over the falls. The river is very wide, maybe 1/2 to a mile across, so no way you could swim to safety, and he current would never let you reach shore anyway. This effort to clean up and stop the erosion of the Falls was a failure, but at least they can now avert many of the doomed boat disasters from when I grew up.
