Switched to this channel today only to see the aftermath of a 2 hour red flagged race. It was obvious something really bad had occured, which prooved to be true. The crash was pretty horrendous, and the worst thing that could have happened did. 15 cars in a pileup, and several went airborne. His took a bad turn with the wind under it, and landed cockpit down centered on the to of the wall. It was said to be unsurvivable injuries. Sad day for racing, he was only a few years older than my son.

Dan Wheldon was killed in a 15-car pileup at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Sunday in the Izod IndyCar Series season finale.

Wheldon was 33.

The crash started in front of Wheldon, the reigning Indianapolis 500 champion and 2005 series champion, and his car launched off of a car in front of him, flipped into the catchfence and erupted in flames on Lap 12.

At one point during the crash, three cars were airborne and upside down.

Wheldon was going for a $5-million bonus for he and a fan in Sunday's race. After starting last, he had worked his way up to 24th place in the 34-car field. (The video starts on board Wheldon's car)

After announcing Wheldon's passing at 6 p.m. ET, IndyCar announced that the race would be halted and the drivers would participate in a five-lap parade in tribute to Wheldon.

In another tragic racing accident, an off road racer was also killed along with his brother and another person, flying from Vegas to California from an off road event. If I find the artical I'll post it, I can not recall his name. He was someone well known to the off road world however.

Sad case of too many cars for that particular track. Open wheels on ovals is a dangerous thing. Especially those at speeds of 230 mph.....

But as usual someone will always try to make more of something than what it really is, or speak in an effort to explain something that they have no knowledge of. They usually come off looking like an idiot! 😉

Too many cars, simple as that!

The drivers all had expressed their concerns and why, before the race. So there is more to this story which the Racing Associations, are all going to have to address. NOt only with this particular track but a review of all tracks, and safety concerns. Thinking its "simple as that" will not be the case IMHO.

You're something special greeney >>>> Like I said you will argue just for arguments sake, you must be one lonely individual.

Image Enlarger

The track was cramped, with a 34-car field, and Wheldon was in the back, running 25th. Then his in-car camera captured a shot of smoke and confusion and cars spinning up ahead.

Please explain what the word " cramped " means within the context of safety. 34 cars on a Track with corners that are too narrow to support 3 wide racing...............

Vegas isn't going to allow Indy, Nascar, or any other racing org to dis one of their White Elephants, especially one that makes them money.

10 less cars, lots more room, and there may have been a bad accident anyway------------but the odds of a fatality go down dramatically..............but to stand in front of cameras and ADMIT THIS is a Lawyers Dream come true-------------So it's obvious that those most knowledgeable will hold their cards very close to their vests.

At the end of the day there were too many cars on that particular track, which ends up meaning that someone is responsible for creating a very UNSAFE environment for a very DANGEROUS sport!!! 😉

Why put 34 cars on a bad track? >>>>>>

And why must you talk down to everyone, declaring anyone with an opinion, would be an idiot? I raised a point, it was a discussion!

Didn't single you out Greeney---yet as always you're very quick to take in straight to your heart. That's exactly why I DON'T use certain words when I tack up a post------------I assume when you use the phrase " TALKING DOWN " You're referring to people in general and not any one specific person.

I have bad news for you Greeney------------In today's world most people are IDIOTS--------Just a quick glance at the headlines would make that very clear to almost anyone. Sorry but that's not my fault................it's a product of the system, but feel free to call it what you will.

Open wheel racers know the risk, they accept the danger, and above all, have knowledge beyond anyone who carries a media credential. 😉

Jimmy Johnson chimed in right after the crash---------AJ and Mario have since sat on him big time forcing him to retract his words about open wheel racing............Like I said----------If you ( this means people who have an opinion ) know nothing about the topic at hand-------------it's always best to button the lip so as not to open mouth and insert foot. Laugh

I give credit to Danica Patrick when after practice she said that given how very smooth the surface of the track was that there was a possibility of going flat all around the track which would cause the field to be bunched up, going three and possibly four wide which COULD make for spectacular crashes!

Let's not take away from the accident or the man who passed as a result----------Wheldon was a well liked, very respected driver, who left behind two beautiful boys and an equally beautiful wife.

Personally I think the reason is as simple as 34 cars being in a field on a track a complete mile shorter than Indy where only 33 make the grid.............Not to mention the width of the track, or the short shoots.............Tracks built for speed in an effort to bring more excitement to the event are no place for 33-34 car fields when it comes to Indy Cars.

Everybody always looks to blame someone, or some thing, when things like this happen. All that's really necessary in most cases is a simple look into a mirror. 😉
