The rumors have actually been around for a lot longer, I remember hearing them at school in Australia in 1955!
Disproven years ago. Check the U-boat sites if you don't believe me, much of the info came from Kriegsmarine records and the men that sailed on these boats. The veritable horses' mouths, as it were...
Of greater interest, and far more important, is Norway's decision to raise the Type IXD2 U-864 and its approximately 70 ton payload of mercury. 😯
FWIW, U-864 was sunk with a torpedo by HMS Venturer on 2/9/1945 off Bremen and is the only known battle in naval history where one submarine sank another while both were submerged. 😎
Viewable U-boats: U-505 (Typ IXc), on display in Chicago, IL; Vesikko (Typ IIa prototype) at the Finnish Military Museum; U-534 (Typ IXc), Birkenhead, England; U-2540 (Typ XXI), Deutsches Schiffahrtsmuseum (German Maritime Museum) at Bremerhaven, Germany; and U-995 (Typ VIIc/41) at Laboe, Germany. There are also several 'dive-able' wrecks in various location along the Atlantic and one off the Florida Keys near Dry Tortugas. :ugeek:
