Cooking parties are very in. Kitchen entertaining is featured in every magazine and in cookbooks as well.

Sometimes a new piece of kitchen equipment is the reason friends gather in the kitchen to make dinner together. At other times, an ethnic theme, a similar interest in certain foods or a holiday is the basis for a joint cooking venture. Those gatherings work because deep down few hosts want to spend party time alone in the kitchen.

If you've never tried it before, make this Halloween the time to bring your circle of adventuresome types into the kitchen -- kids, adults or both. Your plan will give them a chance to show their creativity in making edible "critters" to accompany the dinner menu -- a roast chicken, steaks from the grill or a huge bowl of pre-made chili. IMAGINATION GOES WILD

The recipes suggested here will work at a "cooking" party for kids as much as well as for adults who are too old for trick-or-treating, but still want to have fun on Halloween.

This kind of holiday party will keep everyone indoors, warm, out of harm's way and busy in the kitchen, transforming everyday foods into spooky Halloween edibles -- items that look as good on the plate as they'll taste going down.

To get started, let your imagination go wild -- think of creepy, crawly critters, like purple vampire bats, orange caterpillars, pink spiders and green snakes. No, not the real thing -- just imaginary spooky items all made from homemade or instant mashed potatoes, food coloring and a few fresh vegetables for decoration.
