Jean Ulmer, administrator of personal and preventive health services for the Oakland County Health Division, did confirm the man is recovering. According to Ulmer, the date of onset was Aug. 17, the day the man tested positive for the virus. He was treated with antibiotics for six days at a local medical facility and has since been discharged.

"He could have had the symptoms and went in a few days later," Ulmer said. "We're not sure, but he is recovering. He has diabetes, but it's well under control with medication and he had some neurological symptoms."

Detection of West Nile virus was verified in early July after a Culex mosquito tested positive in eastern Oakland County. The finding was not surprising to local medical specialists, nor was the confirmation of the first human case.
