Santa Cruz, CA (AHN) - Denice Dee Denton, 46, chancellor of the University of California-Santa Cruz died on Saturday after jumping from a 43-story building in San Francisco.

The Medical Examiner's office and a university spokesman confirmed her death, though the cause was still under investigation, AP reported.

UC President Robert Dynes said in a statement that she was an accomplished and passionate scholar whose life and work demonstrated a deep commitment to public service.

According to the news reports, Denton was considered one of the youngest and first openly lesbian chancellors in the UC system history. She was appointed chancellor in 2004 after serving as the dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Washington.
