Effigies of Osama bin Laden are due to be burned on almost every street in Ecuador on New Year's Eve.

Thousands of papier mache models of him will be filled with fireworks and set alight at midnight.

Ecuadorian tradition is to burn images of the least and most popular figures of the year. Bin Laden is the clear winner in the least popular category.

Newspaper Extra reports the statues typically show bin Laden wearing combat gear, a white turban and carrying a machine gun or other weapon.

Meanwhile, football coach Hernán Gómez, who took Ecuador to the World Cup for the first time, is proving the most popular man in the country.

Thousands of statues show the national coach smiling and wearing the national strip.
