WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Trent Lott's oceanfront house in Pascagoula, Mississippi, was among the thousands of homes destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, according to the senator's spokeswoman.
"He's been told there's nothing left" of the 154-year-old house, said Susan Irby, a spokeswoman for the Republican senator. "They [Lott and his family] plan to go out to see if they can recover any valuables."
The Bay St. Louis home of Democratic Rep. Gene Taylor of Mississippi also was destroyed, said Taylor spokeswoman Courtney Littig.
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, who toured affected areas of his state by helicopter Tuesday afternoon, said credible reports indicated as many as 50 to 80 people perished in the Biloxi area alone.
Lott, a former Senate majority leader, discussed the devastation Tuesday with President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
According to a press release, Lott urged Bush to come to Mississippi.
"Your visit would be very good for the morale of Mississippians who are hurting right now," Lott said.
In advance of Katrinia's landfall Sunday, Bush declared 11 southern Mississippi counties disaster areas. On Monday, he declared 41 others eligible for federal aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Lott had owned the house, where his children grew up, for at least 20 years, Irby said.
