OCALA NATIONAL FOREST, Florida (AP) -- The bodies of two friends, one a former Marine who served in Iraq, were found in a lake 10 days after they vanished while testing a new boat engine.
A Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission helicopter crew on Wednesday spotted the body of former Marine Allan Michael Morone, 22, in Halfmoon Lake in Ocala National Forest.
Later, sonar tests showed the body of Morone's friend John Edward Ray, 23, was in the water nearby, and officers recovered it Wednesday evening, said Kat Kelley, spokeswoman for the wildlife agency.
"We didn't want this outcome ... but at least we have closure and he can rest in peace," said Morone's mother, Sandy Morone.
It was not clear how the men died, and Kelley said autopsies were planned.
Morone, from the Ocala area, finished his Marine enlistment about six weeks ago and recently returned from Iraq. Records show he entered active service in 1999.
