RANCHO MIRAGE, California (CNN) -- Former President Ford was taken to a hospital here shortly before noon Friday when he became dizzy during a game of golf, an assistant said.
"He is feeling great; they're just monitoring him," said Penny Circle, Ford's chief of staff.
The 89-year-old former president was playing golf in 96-degree weather.
Circle said Ford was taken to a hospital by Secret Service agents about 11:30 a.m. [2:30 p.m. EDT] and underwent a battery of tests then was released around 3 p.m. PT (6 p.m. ET), she said.
Ford, the nation's 38th president, succeeded and then pardoned President Nixon after the Watergate scandal. He was defeated in his bid for re-election in 1976 by Jimmy Carter.
In 2000, Ford suffered a mild stroke during the Republican Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
