A Gorleston newsagent and his wife had a hairy encounter on the beach yesterday – with a wild boar.



Rob Richardson, who runs a shop in Bells Road, said: "My wife Pauline was walking our dog along the beach when she came across it, and thought it might be a dead alsatian or seal to start with."

The only explanation Mr Richardson can offer for its presence on the beach is that it may have been brought by currents from abroad where it is a native species.

Yarmouth Borough Council has been called to collect the carcass from the beach.

A harbour porpoise washed up in Yarmouth is not thought to have been a victim of the oil pollution that has devastated birdlife along the East Anglian coast. The 4ft-long dark grey mammal was still alive when a dog walker found it near the Pleasure Beach yesterday morning. Staff at Yarmouth Sea Life Centre were alerted but it had died by the time they arrived.

Angela Rackley, the centre's display curator, said: "It was so thin and in such poor condition I don't think we could have done anything to save it."

The porpoise will be collected today by the Natural History Museum, where scientists from its strandings unit will carry out a post-mortem examination.

RSPCA officer Rob Melloy supported the view that oil was an unlikely cause of death.
