LONDON (Reuters) - The British government stepped in on Thursday to save from collapse an historic haunted house with its aristocratic 17th century ghost.


Apethorpe Hall in Northamptonshire, central England, dates from around 1500 and has played host to monarchs including Elizabeth I and her successor James I.

But over the last 20 years it has been left vacant and allowed to deteriorate badly.

"This is a very important building, both architecturally and historically," Arts Minister Tessa Blackstone said. "The present owner has allowed it to fall into disrepair and has not responded to appeals over several years to restore it."

The government has therefore begun a process of buying the property compulsorily.

The hall is said to be haunted by the ghost of one Lady Mildmay who died in 1620 but who has since been seen floating around the mansion dropping coins behind her.

In her lifetime she often used to distribute money to the children of the area.

Apethorpe was acquired in 1982 by its present owner who lives in Greece and has never occupied the house, the English Heritage conservation group said.

"This late 15th century building is one of the most important and majestic country houses in England," English Heritage chief executive Simon Thurley said.

"Without decisive action this unique and irreplaceable building will be lost forever."
